Looking for connections to Menton family from Gorey...some are buried in Toome cemetery.

I cant find any death for my GG Grandfather Patrick whose wife Anne died in Wicklow in 1900 and she was a widow.

Patrick died between Nov1891 and Apr 1900.

He was last recorded as a labourer on records despite vbeing a shepherd for many years.

Thomas Menton County Wexford Born Gorey 1867

Fathers name: Patrick Menton

Mothers name: Anne Murphy

Initially the GRO issued a marriage cert for Thomas from 1891 with the fathers name Patrick which I thought was proven wrong by the NLI marriage record from the church records which stated wrongly father was Thomas.

Mothers name Maria has also turned out wrong as I discovered her bame is anne.

Parents registered as living in Gorey on church marriage record.

They had 3 sons and on each of their marriage certs the father was Patrick so I think that has solved that.

Thomas married Mary Kelly in Cabinteely, Rathdown in Nov 1891 and reared a family in Dublin City. and his father Patrick was recorded on cert as being alive then.

My family has an oral history passed down which states we originally came from the Gorey area also.

I have found a record for Patrick Menton, Toome Parish in Ballyduffbeg Wexford in the Griffiths Valuation from 1853 but no other details and I think this is my GG Grandfather as he was a shepherd around this time.

There are some records available for Menton, Mantan, Mentaan Metan, Matan etc from Gorey between 1850 - 1922 which have all been my family name transcribed wrongly.

Peter Menton 1809 - 1881

Peter Menton is a sibling of my GG Grandfather Patrick, who was also a shepherd in the Gorey area of Wexford.

He married twice I know of…once in 1850 to Mary Scully and then in 1877 to Betty Byrne.

Apparently he originally came from Galway I have been told by an Irish genealogical website and built a sheep run, which still stands today near Gorey...the story goes that he used to count the sheep in Gaelic.

Any help with any details would be greatly appreciated.

Pater and Patricks fathers name was John, also a shepherd.

Peter married Mary Scully in 1850 in Gorey and the variation on his surname was Mentaan.

Peters age is on the 1877 marriage record to Betty Byrne as 68...the variation of the surname on this cert is Mantan.

His death record is also online but makes him a few years older and born around 1804 and aged 77...ages on records are notoriously innacurate so his age is somewhere between all those records and he should have been born around 1809.

Most variations of the Menton name come from the Gaelic version O Mantain although Menton is a French name originally.

Peter Menton ]Mantan] [Mentaan] is buried in Toome with his wife and some of his children.

I will follow this up with an up to date story.
