I found a Hannah Nowlan, who was born in 1801 and married John Doyle, who was born in 1799, on the 7th of June, 1823 in Baltinglass, Co. Wicklow, Ireland, according to the International Genealogical Index database on FamilySearch.org. I wonder whether Hannah was Margaret's first name or middle name. Their marriage took place in a Roman Catholic church in Baltinglass almost two years before they emigrated to the United States.  I could be wrong about Margaret's full birth name being Hannah Margaret or Margaret Hannah Nowlan, though.

Hannah could have been Margaret's grandmother or mother's name, but I did find the birth years in which John and Margaret were born.  Even "Massachusetts Deaths, 1841 -1915" on FamilySearch.org lists her name as Margaret H. Doyle.

 Weird, isn't it?

  • Good Afternoon

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out and apologies for the delay in replying to your message.

The situation is not altogether unknown. One of my own family was known as Baby all her life and it was only when she died we discovered her ?proper? name was Nora. Another was always known as Dolly when in fact her name was Margaret. My grandmother is Mary but is always called Kathleen!  You could contact the Parish Priest and request a copy of the marriage record on the off-chance that the information on family search is incomplete or incorrect. It could be a case that this is a different person altogether.

    Contact St. Joseph's, Baltinglass:

  • Hi, Clare,

Thank you for your suggestion about the Baltinglass Parish web site. I'll be sure to check it out. It is indeed possible that the ancestor I'm looking for  (Margaret Doyle, born in 1801) and Hannah Nowlan Doyle are not one and the same person, although both women were born in about 1801. I'm also keeping in mind the naming patterns that existed in Ireland. I have a lot of ancestors whose first name is Margaret-a few on the Irish side and one on the Scottish side, now that I've mentioned the naming patterns.

      Thanks again for the suggestion.
