Hi,

I have recently sourced the newspaper death notice (attached) of my great grandfather Michael Molloy (b abt 1853, d 4 Dec 1891), which appeared in the "Freeman's Journal" published 5 Dec 1891. He died in Dublin.

The URL of the death which I sourced via Findmypast is:

http://search.findmypast.co.uk/bna/viewarticle?id=bl%2f0000056%2f18911205%2f002

The death notice relates 'Michael Molloy, eldest son of John Molloy, Glown, Baltinglass, County Wicklow'. This is the first reference I have identified which leads me to County Wicklow with my Molloy ancestors.

I am seeking information on the home location of John Molloy.

I have conducted google seacrhes for 'Glown' & 'Baltinglass'; however I have been unable to find a place name of Glown near Baltinglass. There appears to be no townland of that name.

On the internet I found referernces which suggest 'Glown' may be an anglicisation of 'Gleann' (valley).

Does anyone know of a place called 'Glown' near Baltinglass?

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated?

Also, contact with anyone who knows of or is related to the Molloy's of County Wicklow who may be able to assist.

Cheers,

Bernard McManus

  • There's a townland named Glowens located a short distance (abt 6km / 4 miles) to the south west of Baltinglass see : OSI Map  The townland is in Kineagh Civil parish, Co. Kildare and consists of just over 270 acres.

  • Many thanks for your reply and feedback.

I had noted Baltinglass was almost on the intersection of counties Wicklow, Kildare & Carlow, however I did not think to look for the townland in Kildare or Carlow. I noted from Griffiths valuation that Glowens is in the poor law union of Baltinglass.

I believe I have now found the marriage record (attached) of John Molloy, who married  Catherine Kavanagh on 22nd October 1849 in Graney, County Kildare. From the map it looks to me that Graney lies about 8km SW of Baltinglass. I assume Graney may be the parish of Catherine Kavanagh, as I understand at that time the marriage ceremony nomally took place in the bride's parish.

This to me seems to fit in very well with Glowens, County Kildare as the townland appears to be mid-way between the two places.

I checked the Griffiths valuation (conduted 1852) for Molloy surname, in Glowens, no hits; however there are plenty of hits for Molloy's in other parts of County Kildare. Nothing obvious though.

If you have any other thoughts or ideas, please let me though.

My next step is going to be to try and identify his death record. To date, i have identified three possible candidates in the civil registration index of deaths. I will probably have to request all three records.

Once I have an idea of his age at death I will try to identify his date of baptism in the parish records. Fingers crossed on that one!

    Cheers,

    Bernard
