I am trying to find Peter Bernes of Bray, Wicklow he was born around 1840 and died around 1894.  He was married to Mary Murray arounjd 1864 and they had several children, there was William a stoker at Bray Gas works, Margaret a cook/housemaid working at Duncairn Terrace for the town clerk I think and another was Catherine Bernes, my Grandmother.  Catherine married William Mulvey a WW1 soldier and one of his brothers - Stephen fought at the Dublin Post Office during the Rising.  There is a known relative of Grandads brother Stephen in Bray who on initial contact agreed to help me but then failed to!    If anyone knows anything about Peter Bernes or anything else that might help me trace him - please reply.

I found a death index record for a Peter Bernes who died in 1897 in the Rathdown registration district (which includes Bray). If you want to get a copy of this record, you can write to the GRO www.groireland.ie  fill out their form and provide the information on the death index record. I also located a Mary Bernes living in Bray in the 1901 census. Not sure if this is Peter's wife. Did they have a daughter named Mary?

  • Thanks for your help Castlemore, Roscommon.  I shall check that out asap and hopefully it will be the right Peter Bernes.  I believe the Mary Bernes you found is my Great Grandmother.
