Looking for any information on Matthew Loughlin born around 1856 married Bridget Murphy born around 1862.  Has children Margaret, William (married Sarah Cooney), Matthew, Thomas, Anna, and Ellen.  Bridget, Margaret, Thomas, Anna, and Ellen were all in Detroit by 1915.  Would like to know where Matthew was buried and get Ellen birth certificate.  also would like to know if any of the rest of th family is still there.

I think this is the civil birth index record for Ellen. You would have to contac the GRO to get a copy or a full certificate depending on your needs. See my other note. It looks like Matthew may have died in 1919.

  • Hi Roger,

When I went up on the GRO it asked for the hospital/house address.  Where would I get that?  Not sure if this is my Matthew.  He shows on the 1901 census with Bridget children William, Matthew, Thomas, Anna and Ellen.  Maragret was already working in Dublin at the time.  1910 Thomas comes to America.  !911 census show Bridget as head of household, Anna and Ellen as the only two children in the house.  William is married to Sarah Cooney and they appear in John Cooney's household in the 1911 census.  No sign of the two Matthews in the 1911  census.  1912 Maragret joins Thomas in Detroit.  september of 1915 Anna and Ellen arrive in America (Ellen now calls herself Nellie) and join Thomas and Maragret in Detroit.  Nov 1915 Bridget arrives in Detroit.  1916 Bridget appears in the Detroit directory living with Thomas and states she is a widow.  1918 Bridget dies.  William dies in Scotland and Sarah joins the family in Detroit.  Ellen (Nellie) is my grandmother.  Thomas, her brother was the personal body guard of Eleanor and Edsel Ford.  Would love to know what happen to the two Matthews and where the older Matthew is buried.

    Thanks,

    Mary

I'm not familiar with the GRO asking for a hospital/house address. I assume you followed these instructions? You don't want to file online but rather print out the form and mail it to the GRO.

Go to this link http://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Apply-for-Certificates.aspx In the middle of the page there are links for birth, marriage or death certificates. Hit the link for the form you want. You will likely get a screen asking for a User Name and Password. (This is a program bug that the GRO has to correct). Hit cancel and the appropriate form should come up. Print the form and complete the requested information. Also provide the information from the index record--quarter/year of the event. registration district and the volume and page number where the event is recorded. Make sure you ask for a copy which costs around 4 euros. ( A cert costs closer to 20 euros). You can also ask the GRO to e-mail the copy back to you.

The 1911 census record shows Bridget as married. I found a record for a Matthew Loughlin in Bray living with his sisters and brother and brother in law. This Matthew is listed as married and I'm surmising that he is the father of Ellen.

  • Hi Roger,

You are correct.  I have also been researching on rootsireland.ie and have found the Thomas, Margaret and Elizabeth Quigley were all Mathew siblings.  I wonder why he wouldn't be living with Bridget, Anna and Ellen?  I also wonder what happen to their son Mathew.  I do believe he is the Mathew who died in 1919.  Thank you for your help.  I will be in Ireland in July and we are researching my side the Loughlins and my husband's side the O'Donnell of Scariff Clare county and the Lavin of Swineford, Mayo County.  We are hoping to get the birth certificates so we can apply for dual citzenship.

The Matthew who died in 1919 was born in 1859 according to the index record. This info would have been provided by the informant and may not be real accurate but it is close to the 1856 in your note. So I think you can rule out the son.

    Enjoy your trip to Ireland.
