My great grandfather, Thomas Mahony, served in the RIC in Bray & surrounding areas from 1854 until  his retirement in 1879.  He then moved to Dalkey where he became a Relieving Officer for the Rathdown Union until September 1909.  Sometime after 1911 he & his wife Elizabeth (nee Cullen)  returned to live at 2 Park Terrace Bray, accompanied I believe by his three daughters, Catherine (Kate), Elizabeth (Lizzy) & Bridget.  Elizabeth (nee Cullen), who died in May1913 & Thomas, who died in February 1918,  had four sons who served in WW1, Thomas Bernard,  James (my grandfather), William & John.  Thomas Bernard, an Honorary Captain & Quatermaster in the Royal Irish Regiment, was killed in France in January 1918, 10 days after being awarded the Military Cross, & is remembered on the War Memorial in Quinsborough Rd, Bray.  Elizabeth married & moved to Wexford & Catherine (Kate) continued living in Bray until her death in 1951 at St Patrick’s Home Kilmainham.  After the war John Mahony, who had been a Prisoner of War.  returned to Bray, where he married & lived with his wife Olive (nee Keogh) & son Paddy. To date I have been unable to find out what happened to William & Bridget, although in 1924 she was a bridesmaid at her sister Elizabeth’s marriage to John Leacy at the Roman Catholic Church, Little Bray. My great grandmother Elizabeth (nee Cullen) was the daughter of Thomas Cullen, a coachman at Palermo & I believe that one of her sisters married a member of the Dodd family in Bray.  In fact Denis Dodd of 96 Greenpark Rd Bray was best man at her son John's wedding.  I am particularly trying to find out what happened to Bridget & William & would appreciate any information on either.

I have forwarded your request to a volunteer in the area who may be able to assist or advise you.

Have you considered contacting the local parish offices for further assistance? http://www.wicklowcommunitydirectory.ie/pub_org_specific.php?choice=559

  • HI Doreen,

Our volunteer has advised that you try:

Wicklow Newsletter and County Advertiser newspapers for the years concerned with the man's time in Bray, especially the court cases. (Co. Library, Bray or National Library, Kildare Street, Dublin.)

    Regards

  • Many thanks.  During my research I have managed to locate a number of newspaper articles re Thomas Mahony, both whilst serving in the RIC & and as Relieving Officer in Dalkey.  It is his daughter Bridget, born in 1890 in Dalkey but who I believe may have moved to Bray with her parents & sisters, & her brother William post WW1, that I particularly want to locate. Can anyone tell me when Electoral Registers came into being in Ireland & if they are available for Bray since there inception?

  • Hi. A volunteer has compiled the following information:

I cannot fime william or bridget in the parish records for Bray or Dun Laoghaire
St Peters Church in Little Bray was out of use for about 5 years around the early 1880'd and all recording of births at that time tookn place in Dun Laoghaire.
I spoke with Nancy Mahony a member of the Bray Cualann Historical Society. I have put together a small powerpoint of the Mahony/ Dodd family from Bray Parish records and other records that we have access too.
Hope this is of some help.

    Regards

Brian White  The ppt file is too large to upload here, if you email me coconnor@irelandxo.com I can attach it and send it on. regards,

  • Hello, I realise some years have passed since your post however I wanted to let you know that I am the granddaughter of Dennis Dodd who you mentioned was best man at John's wedding. It was good to see his name appear and so I wanted to make contact. I understand we have a connection with a Mary Cullen, a surname you also mentioned.

I wish you well in your endeavours

    kind regards

  • Hi Madeleine

Lovely to hear from you & thank you for your reply.  If you are the granddaughter of the above Denis (born 1887), son of Thomas Dodd & Maryanne Cullen, then you are my 3rd cousin, as Maryanne was the sister of my great grandma Elizabeth Cullen Mahony.

I first found out about the Dodd connection with my Cullen/Mahony family from Nancy Mahony in Bray.  She was the daughter-in-law of the above mentioned John Mahony & she was a friend of the late Jennie Dodd, who had told her of the Dodd/Cullen connection. I visit Nancy whenever I am in Ireland.

Maryanne & Elizabeth Cullen had a sister Mary & whilst researching I have  found that she emigrated to Canada & in 1879 she married a hotel keeper, Jacob Mannon Brooks in Durham, Oshawa, Ontario.  Another sister, Margaret married a Patrick Dempsey in Bray in 1883.

Thomas Mahony M.C. whose name is on the Bray War Memorial was my great uncle & the first cousin of Denis Dodd.

Do you know if there are any photos of Maryanne Cullen Dodd in your family?  There is no photo within my family of  my great grandma Elizabeth Cullen Mahony so it would be lovely to see a photo of her sister.

    With my very best wishes

If you have an interest in your family history I'm quite happy to let you have what I have found out though unfortunately I haven't yet got back further than Maryanne's parents & the names of her mother's parents.
