My GG Grandmother came to Australia as an assited immigrant on The Ellenbrough arrived Sydney in October 1853. She was 24 years old on arrival so born probably 1829.

Letitia put her native place as Castlemacadam, County Wicklow. Parents Thomas ( deceased) and Fanny  whom she said was living in County Wicklow. The imigration records are hard to read but seem to say she was Church of England, could neither read or write and was a general house servant.

Letitia married William Riley in 1856 in NSW, he is said to be Irish but there are no records of his arrival in Australia that I can find. One old family story says he jumped ship here but that was often used as a cover up rather than say convict.

I have come to a dead end with these two who are my most direct line, my birth name was Riley.

If anyone has come across this family during their family searches I'd be very grateful for any info.

  • Hi Anne,

Some of the public member trees on ancestry.com have this family. Letitia is Letitia Moorhead

I found birth records for both Letitia and William on rootsireland.ie. The parish of registration on the record for her is Castlemacadam C of I but not his.  rootsireland.ie is a pay site but the records will give you the parents' names and the parish of his birth.

rootsireland also has a record of a marriage of Thomas Moorehead in Wicklow in 1815

I searched for siblings of Letitia (surname Moorehead no first name father Thomas 1825 + - 10 years and got 9 matches

I hope this gets you through the dead-end.
