Seeking any information regarding Hugh Kearns b c1827 and Ellen Cosgrove/Cosgrave bc 1830. Came to Australia on the Great Britain in 1869 with 3 children Patrick, Henry and Ellen. Any information would be great. I believe they may have lived in Dunganstown at some point.

  • Ian:

Roots Ireland www.rootsireland.ie has an 1831 baptismal record for a Hugh Kearns in the Killaveney RC parish records. This could be a different Hugh Kearns but I thought I would mention the record.

I also located an 1860 baptismal record for a Mary Kearns parents Hugh and Ellen in the Kilbride RC records. Kilbride is the RC church for the civil parish of Dunganstown. I also found an 1863 baptismal record for an Ellen Kearns same parents in the Kilbride records.

Roots is a pay site to view a transcription of a church record.

  • Baptisms matching those parents names are showing on the index of RootsIreland (pay-website) for Ellen in 1863 and Mary 1860, both Co. Wicklow. I cant get either of the baptisms to match to a parish at the moment, and I've gone through them all...

You need a few credits to view a transcript, which should show baptism date, name of the child and full names of both parents, also names of godparents. The records should show a parish name and the record may include a more detailed location for the family - e.g. the name of a townland. (Based on matching parents full names, I believe they are RC baptisms - CofI baptisms dont usually include mother's maiden name)

for ref - Dunganstown is the name of a civil parish, and also two townlands within this parish, and the area was part of the Catholic parish of Kilbride along with two other civil parishes. Baptism and marriage records for the parish go back to abt 1858. (p.s. be careful if searching for Kilbride as there are a number of places of this name in or near Co. Wicklow)

EDIT : only just spotted Roger's reply... dont think I can delete this...
While I think of it, I also checked for a marriage and any earlier children, but suspect may also have taken place in Kilbride and were too early for the available records for the parish.

  • Hi Roger, thank you for that. I think we have the right Ellen as she was 6 on arrival in Australia in 1869 which is the right age and her parents names are correct as well, Hugh and Ellen. I have no information on a Mary born 1860 she didn't accomany them to Australia, she may have sadly passed before that time. Our Hugh was 42 on arrival in 1869, making his birth 1827/28. It is possible he wasn't baptised until later or there is an incorrect date somewhere.

On arrival they also had two sons Patrick b 1852 and Hugh born 1856, 17 and 13 on arrival in1869.

I will look at that paysite, and see if I can get hold of that record. Thank you for all your help.
