James Byrne c.1770, of Barravore Townland, Co Wicklow, married Mary Byrne c. 1770 from the same area. I've been told that there were two Byrne clans living in the Glenmalure Valley which presumably means our family would be connected to both clans due to this wedding. They had a daughter, Bridget, born 1810. Bridget married Michael Connor on 04 Aug 1830 at Drumgoff in the Parish of Rathdrum, Co Wicklow, Ireland. They had nine children, all baptised in the Parish of Rathdrum but at the church in Drumgoff as far as I can ascertain.

The older four children emigrated to Australia first. Bridget & Michael followed with the younger five children in 1864 and settled in Sunbury, Victoria. Some of the family names who married these Connors/O'Connors are:- *Commerford; Stafford; *Nolan; Carroll; Canty; *Dwyer. If anyone has any information on members of this family, either in Ireland or in Australia, I would very much like to hear from you.

UPDATE:-

*James, Nolan, was Baptised at Carriglineen, Parish of Rathdrum, Co Wicklow on the 4/5/1845. Sponsors were Patrick Farrell and Mary Connor.

*Dwyer, Stephen was Baptised in the Parish: Owning; Diocese: Ossory; Co. Kilkenny; Was from Owning Townland,         Barony: Iverk;

*Commerford, William was from the Parish: Templemore; Townland: Kiltillane; County: Tipperary

Any information on any of these folk would be most gratefully appreciated.

In anticipation, Bridget.

  • Bridget:

    Welcome to ireland Reaching Out!

I assume from your note that you have the baptismal data for the nine children of Michael and Bridget.

I looked at the prior Rathdrum messages and there was one other Byrne message posted in Rathdrum.

Hopefully others will see your message and post comments.

Have you considered autosomal DNA testing?

  • Hi Bridget,

Could Canty be Carty?  My great great grandmother was from Rathdrum, her name was Ellen Carty before marriage, she married William Kavanagh and they migrated to Sydney in 1854.  WK's father was a Miles Kavanagh.  Once established in Sydney - he went from farm labourer to hotelier - he brought out his siblings.  I haven't been able to find out much about her family though.

    cheers

  • I too am researching this family.  My GGG grandfather was Stephen Nolan / Nowlan born circa 1797  I haven't yet confirmed but his death records show his that his mother was Rose and father James. Many trees show this as Rose Byrne.

He married Elizabeth Farrell in Drumgoff Rathdrum Wicklow Ireland in April 1825.   Her parents are James Farrell and Dorothy or Catherine Byrne.

By 1858 the family were living in the Digby Coleraine area of Victoria.    There is a possibility that her brother or nephwes came to Shea Oak Log in SA.    Bryan Bernard Farrell father Michale.

  • Hi Sandra,
The name is definitely Canty and this family hails from Dromcolliher, Co Limerick. The Canty family arrived in Australia in the 1830s
Bridget Canty married Timothy Connor. Timothy emigrated with his family to Australia in 1865.
    Thanks for your contact.
    Kind regards, Bridget.
