My g.g.grandmother  Mary Magee married John Malloy September 14th 1857 in Rathdrum, Co. Wicklow. I have  marriage details but no information as to where John came from.

Any advise would be welcome

    Hi,

    Thank you for your message.

Have you tried looking for John?s baptismal/birth record online? If you can find this it would give you his parish of origin. If you have not already done so, here are some places you could try:

www.familysearch.org This is a huge database of genealogical records that has been compiled by the Church of the Latter Day Saints

www.irishgenealogy.ie Church records are currently being uploaded here frr of charge. However this is an ongoing project so only Kerry, Cork, Carlow and parts of Dublin have been completed so far.

www.rootsireland.ie Another website with a huge collection of Church records-however you have to pay to use this website.

Some other websites which may be helpful are:

The National Archives of Ireland http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/introduction/

The National Library of Ireland http://www.nli.ie/en/family-history-introduction.aspx

    Irish Times: http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/index.htm

    Genealogy Links: http://www.genealogylinks.net/uk/ireland/wicklow/index.html

Perhaps it may also be an idea to contact Wicklow Family History Centre for assistance-however a fee may apply. Here are their contact details:

    Wicklow Family History Centre,

    County Archives,

    Wicklow County Council,

    Wicklow Town.

    Phone: +353 (0) 404 20126              Email: wfh@eircom.net

I hope this is helpful. Remember to post as much information as you can with regard to the people you are researching. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.

Please be patient - as our programme has only begun to rollout across the island of Ireland and volunteers in some areas may not yet be organized.

    Kind regards,

  • Hello Emma,

Thank you for your reply. I have tried for many years to find information about these familes. The problem is that John Maloy is a very common name plus the fact that it was changed many times (Moloy, Molloy, etc) I really have tried most of the tips you have given me over the years, and was delighted to find this new website. I have high hopes of getting somewhere eventually, thanks to people like yourself.  (I have a lot of Irish ancestry). They nearly all came to England around the i840-1860's some of their children were born in  Cleator Moor ,Cumberland and I found their parents names through the birth certificates. Nearly all the parents marriages were in  Catholic churches in Ireland and that is all the information they gave.

I do have another family in Bray.   Eliza  b. 1846 wife of  Michael Burns b. about 1838. I  have been trying to find Eliza's maiden name . I did find one contact where there was a marriage in Wicklow  about 1846  their daughter Annie, was b.  in 1866 which is about right,  the names were Elizabeth Quinn and Michael his name was Byrne. I don't know how I would find out if this may be them since I don't know the actual date to apply for the licence. I do know this is the right area because these are my g.grandparents and my mother told me this is where they came from.

I have used the  lds family search for a long time and found the problem there was the registration only began in 1864 with a few from 1845. I found the information about Michael and Eliza on familysearch. but these are just trascriptions so don't give a lot of informaion. With rootsireland I had a subscription but again because so many names are similar and from the same area it costs a lot of euros trying to find just one name. I am grateful for any help you give me and look forward to finding more. eventually.

It was good to hear from you.

    Thanks again,

    Carma

  • Hi Carma, my name is Sheila( nee Burns) Mary Magee and John Malloy are my ancestors too! (G-g grandparents). Michael Byrne/Burns and Eliza Quinn are my paternal g-g grandparents, Annie Burns is my great grandmother. ( I have added her photo to the Wicklow group)The family emigrated to Frizington in Cumbria and worked in the iron ore mines. My father, Edward Burns, was born there in 1920. His father, Michael, was Annie Burns’ son( born out of wedlock!) John Malloy ( Johannes Melly on ancestry) and Mary Magee’s daughter Margaret married Edward Fowler, their daughter Elizabeth is my grandmother. I have Johannes Melly b.1810 and Anna Nolan b.1812 as John’s parents. John Malloy died  3rd March 1886, Cleator, Cumbria. Regards, Sheila
