HI, I'm looking for relatives of Francisus (Francis or Frank) Cullen, my gggggf, born 1780, around Redcross. He married  Bridgit Wynne and had John around 1810. John had Frank, and Frank had John, who came to the United States in 1882. Franciscus' grandson, Frank, (married Kate Murphy) mined near Tigroney West. His son John was baptized in the parish church in Avoca.  Thank you for any info. Paul

  • Roger, Thank you so much. I knew of Frank's death, but until you kindly sent the death info, I had no idea he has a son Patrick. That opens up a whole new area for me. I gather Cronebane, Redcross and Tigroney are close to each other? Paul

  • Paul:

Tigroney West is a townland in Castlemacadam civil parish in southeast Co. Wicklow. Cronebaneis another townland in Castlemacadam parish and for purposes of the census in the area, Cronebane was also the name of the District Electoral Divison which is where the registrar for the area (likely a doctor) was located. Redcross where the family was located earlier is a townland, a small village  http://visitwicklow.ie/towns-villages/redcross/#  and a civil parish just to the east of Castlemacadam.

  • I have researched my husband's family tree and some of your names have come up.  He is descended from Frank Cullen (1838 -1916).  His son was Patrick Cullen born 1869.  He worked in the mining industry and started his family in Cronebane but in the 1890's the family had relocated to Dublin and Patrick was working on the railways.  He had 11 children of whom only 8 survived at the 1911 census and another died the following year.  My husbands grandmother was one of his children.  I have no more information on other descendants if any.

  •  Hi Annie,

Patrick is the younger brother of John, my ggf, who came to the States in 1882 and worked in the coal mines in Mahanoy Cithy, Schuylkill Co. Pa.

His father, Frank, my gggf,  married Kate Murphy Cullen. As you know, he died in 1916, and Patrick attended his death. Kate died in 1907. I don't  know where they were buried.

Frank mined sulphur in Tig. West. They married in 1859.

I believe they had these children:

John, whom I think died in infancy because my ggf was also named John.1860

        James 1861-2

        John, my ggf, 1863

Patrick I have him born in 1865, but could be wrong

          Mary 12/21/1870

       Francis? 1872

       Catherine 3/14/1874

       Marion 1875

       Margaret 9/23/1876

        Bridget, 1873?

Frank and Kate had a graddaughter Delia Connolly, who lived with them, according to the 1901 census.

I've been looking at baptismal records to see if I can find Frank's brothers/sisters and Kate's by looking at the sponsors, whom I think were usually related.

I have a pix of John, but nothing else.

I think Frank's father was John of Redcross. B@1808. I think Kate's father was James, born about the same time, but I don't know where.

Thanks for the e-mail. I live in Lancaster, Pa, USA.

  • Cullen is a very popular name in Ireland but particularly in the Wicklow area!  I have used the civil records for births, marriages and deaths and the census for my sources.  There seems to be two Patrick Cullens from the same area.  My one is in 1901 and 1911  census in Dublin (Merrion) and this gives his age from where I worked back to date of birth.  But I was unable to find a  birth record for him in the civil register.  I did find his marriage in 1889 in Avoca RC church to Anne Ryan and this gives his father as Frank Cullen.

As the Patrick Cullen living in Cronebane in 1901/11 is living close to Frank Cullen, it is likely that his is the son who attended him on his death.   There are a couple of marriage records for him to a Catherine that are possiblities to confirm who his father was but they are not available online yet.

You seem to have done a lot of research.  Are the church records available?

If you would prefer, I can be contacted directly by email at annieoburns@gmail.com.

  • Just a bit more on the grandchild, Delia.  I found her living with her widowed mother, Isobel Connolly in the 1911 census in Dublin City.  She is given as aged 12 yrs and a place of birth is also given as Gosport Hampshire UK.  She is her mother's only child and her mother is  music teacher.  I was unable to find a birth record in UK for Delia or her parents' marriage.  There is one Delia Connolly in the 1939 UK register and she is a nun in Stoke on Trent with date of birth as 15 Feb 1899.
