I understand that my great Grandfather James Finerty was born in Clonfert, Fohenagh on the 13th April1857 to Michl Finnerty and Honoria Gaughwin.  I have found an extract from the register for the Roman Catholic church but I am unable to identify which church the Baptism took place in.  I wonder if anyone could help my identify the church or find out any other information about his parents such as where they lived.  I think Michl, presumbably Michael, was born around 1819-1820 and his wife possibly around the same time or a little earlier. They possibly died in Ballinasloe. Is there a register of the cemetries that I could search for them?

Any help would be much appreciated.

I attach a copy of the entry for James Finerty in the hope that someone can identify the church of the baptism.

Many thanks.

I looked at the 1855 Griffiths Valuation for Fohanagh civil parish  and there are two Michael Finerty/Finnerty records. One for Doon Upper townland (Finerty) and the other for Carrowreagh townland. I'd vote for Doon Upper

The baptism either occurred in Fohanagh (St. Patrick's) or the subordinate chapel in Killure (St. Teresa's). The records for that combined parish start in 1827  so unlikely to be able to find a baptismal record for Michael Finerty. I also did not locate a baptismal record for Honoria and no marriage record.

I will look some more for death records.

Do you know when Michael and Honoria died? Besides James and a brother Michael that I located, were there other siblings?

  • Hi roger

Thank you so much for looking into this for me.  It is very much appreciated.

On I have found 3 family trees which include:

    Honora Gaughvin

    Honora Gaughwin

All refer to Michael Finnerty as her spouse. Children listed are Brian (0), Mary (0), Bridget (Bidy) born 1844, Martin born 1849 Michael born 1855 - 1937, and James born 1857

One lists her father as Denis Gaughwin (1785- 1857)

Death for Honora is listed as 23.06.1877 at Killure, Ahascragh, Ballinasloe.

I cannot see a marriage certificate (??!! Catholics) and I cannot see the death of Michael Finnerty. There a few hints on Ancestry that i need to look into including the Griffins Valuation 1857 showing a Michael Finnerty at 6 Society Street, Ballinasloe. Is there anyway I can find out who was living there with him and whether this matched to the spouse and children above?

    Kind Regards

The Griffiths only has the name of the head of household and the size of the land that was leased or owned. It was a tax survey and as such no info on family members.

I had found the baptismal records for Michael and James yesterday on the subscription site Roots Ireland. I was able to find Bridget (shown as Bidy) and Martin today. On Martin's transcription, the name of the father was shown as Mike and Roots Ireland apparently does not recognize Mike as a variant to Michael.  I found no record for Bernard or Mary in the Fohanagh RC parish records.

I did see the death record you mention for Honoria. Location was Killure More townland in Kilgerrill civil parish which is just southeast of Fohanagh parish.

I located an 1892 death record for a Michael Finerty in Killure More with son Michael as informant. See second record.

  • Hi Roger

It would appear that the James Finnerty I had traced to Killure is not my Great Grandfather after all. I have found out from someone else who has James in their family tree that this particular James Finnerty died when he was 21.  My Great Grandfather travelled to England and died at the age of 50 in Rochdale.  All I have is James Finnerty born in Galway 1856. Back to the drawing board!
