According to family legends, the Lallys (maybe only 1?) left Ireland during the Great Famine in the 1840s, traveling (probably on one of the coffin ships) to Canada, then down the St. Lawrence River, ultimately ending up in Niles, Ohio.

On my mother's side, the Welch's, from Kings County, also left during the Famine, ending up in Utica, NY. I'd love to be able to trace back any of them!

  • King's county is the old name for what is now called Offaly.

It's sister county was Queen's county - Laois.

  • My G Grandmother was Anna Bridget Lally and she was born in Birr, Co.Offaly. Her father, Thomas, was born in St Helena and his father James before him in Kiltormer, Galway. James was a soldier in St Helena during Napoleon's imprisonment but he was linked to a tea merchant company (I imagine the East India Tea Company) as this is noted on his discharge papers . This may well be a wild goose chase, but I would imagine her family were related to Lallys' in Birr as this is where they returned afterwards. That is as far back as I have got so far, but I am hunting.
