Researching William Cross and Johanna Murphy

William was born in County Cork about 1817

Johanna Murphy was born about 1817

They were married in Ireland.Tthey had a son Phillip(my great grandfather) on May 15,1848 and they may have had another child, as it has been stated that Phillip stated that he had a brother (age about 2) that died on the voyage to the USA and was buried at sea.

Both William and Johanna were buried in Vinegar Hill Cemetery in Illinois. He died on Feb 11, 1878 and she died on June 2, 1884.

They were Catholic.

Immigated in 1852 according to the census.

Johanna may have had a sister, Honora, born about 1820. She married Charles Kane.

In the 1860 census they lived near one another in Vinegar Hill, Illinois. Vinegar Hill is just over the Wisconsin border.

  • Hi there,

Thank you very much for your query. You have already found out interesting information about your ancestors. Did the census records mention the name of the ship or the port they arrived at or a specific date? Usually information was taken at the place of arrival rather than departure. Details about your ancestors could have been taken and may include a more specific location in Cork. You should also consult the birth and marriage records for them. Marriage records date from 1845 in Ireland, but your ancestors might have been married after that year. You should find knowing the details you have already gathered very helpful for searching the birth records. When you do find the correct birth record, you might pick up on more clues about William Cross and Johanna Murphy.

In the meantime, keep checking the IRO website. Someone in the community might know more information.

    Kind regards,

    Sinead Cooney

Again, another of my "Irish roots" that I can't find  in Ireland! I also have census records, statements from their children, and the newspaper article on deaths.  found these online, but can't confirm any of it.
