ok, having broken the ice, I have a legitimate query here. See the ice breaker post and it already displays the passenger list of the Merchant ship the Bussorah that sailed 1850 and transported James and Elizabeth nee Murphy to Geelong and or Melbourne, seeing them settle in Geelong.  According to

I have a real problem here, about the last real gaff in the makeup of an extensively researched tree that has Irish heritage at its roots.  So, what I know is that Joanna is listed as a 3 year old, and Ellen as an infant.  Mary also aged 3 is simply absent on the passenger list. The Johanna is at best mis-spelt,  the only form listed from the search being Joanna.

1. Do the records of county Laois vary in their structure to the records of county Kilkenny?

According to the above, daughters Ellen and Mary are confirmed born to Elizabeth and James Delany in Kilkenny by a church baptism record in the parish of Clara RC, 1849 and 1847 respectively.  However, first born Joanna, also 1847, only comes up as a hit as born in the neighbouring county of Laois.  This is feasible seeing they border one another.  However, while entries of parents names on selecting Kilkenny county as birth place for Mary & Ellen gives an effective hit, selection of Laois refutes the nomination of James Delan(e)y and Elizabeth Murphy as parents of this Joanna.

Nomination of parents family names for mother and father of Delany retains the integrity of the hit.  This can only mean that the record returning the hit has parents named both under the married family name, Mr & Mrs. Delany, utterly ommiting the use of the mother's maiden name, the only exception being if a man Delany married a woman Delany either incestuously or from distinct families of the same family name.

Frankly this does not tempt to fork out the 5 euros or english pounds or whatever the currency to view a record that refutes the expected legitimate parents of the child of the record.  While I am tempted to do so for James to ascertain his parents identity, I am looking to confirm that they bore a Joanna in 1847, not refute it.

2. The search of names of the passenger list, do they include children? The passenger list already long procured, we have at minimum Ellen and Joanna.  The search on names only returns hits of James & Elizabeth Delany, parents.  Does this mean I am getting a hit on some separate James and Elizabeth Delan(e)y on some other ship?

NB. Johanna or Joanna is listed in subsequent birth certs. of later born children as a deceased child, opposing a possible conclusion that the missing Mary was mis-listed as Johanna.  Please help.

  • Cancel that. After all this time, it was a matter of spelling.

"The Johanna is at best mis-spelt,  the only form listed from the search being Joanna."

Turns out the scribe did in fact spell her name correctly, 1 less for the list of mis-spellt names.  Not sure what made me think the correct original was Joanna.  I wonder if it was the pronunciation of Johanna that was audibly discernable from Joanna.  Sure enough, her batismal record came up in the same parish (Clara R/C) as her sisters.

I'd have thought that in the search engine in http://kilkenny.rootsireland.ie that Johanna would be treated as an alternate spelling to Joanna, but apparently not.
