In his U.S. Naturalization petition in 1843 my ancester (Patrick Dinning) indicates he was born in Cortubber, Co Cavan, Parish of Inniskeen. Does anyone know if Cortubber an estate or village? When I search I am taken to Co. Roscommon. Thank you.

The spelling of the townland in Enniskeen parish is Cortober.

Sorry. I forgot to mention that Cortober is 469 acres in size and is likely farmland with a few houses. Someone local would be able to confirm.

Hi Trish, Cortober is not too far away from where I live, it is a townland, (a collection of fields & houses) between the towns of Bailieborough & Kingscourt, co Cavan just inside the boundaries of the the Counties of Cavan & Meath.
If you are visiting here I can meet you & show you the Area.

Hi Carmen, Thank you so much for your reply. I don't have travel plans at present but after many years of research I just found that one document to verify where the Dennings (Dinnings) lived before emigrating to the U.S. So it's likely I will come over at some point to locate parish records. Your information is especially helpful because Massachusetts death records indicate that some of the Dennings were from Meath, and now that makes sense because Enniskeen parish seems to encompass towns in Cavan and Meath. I lived & worked in Dublin and Kilkenny about 30 years ago but haven't been over to visit for a long time. This will give me another good reason. All the best, Trish
