Hi I am looking for more information on my great great grandfather.
He was born Thomas Gilpin Johnson about 1838 Tullamore Armagh (according to 1811 UK census)
I have found him in all UK census records from 1871 onwards. I also have his marriage record and probate record.
Probate reads
JOHNSON the reverend Thomas Gilpin of 12 Severn-road Weston-super-Mare clerk died 20 July 1916 at the Rocks tavern Loughgall Armagh Ireland Administration London 30 September to Ellen Johnson widow.
I would like to find out the circumstances of his death, why he was at the Rock Tavern and whether Ellen was with him.
Also trying to find more on his parents and if there were siblings.
Thomas's marriage has his father as Robert Johnson farmer. Perhaps his mothers maiden name was Gilpin.
Would appreciate any help
Thanks Fiona

Hi Fiona,
Thank you very much for your messag. I hope that someone with information makes a connection with you and helps you to further your research.
In the meantime, have you tried looking at newspaper archives to see if you can find any articles relating to his death? You could try contacting the Local Library to see what archives they have. Also, the Public Records of Northern Ireland may also have some available:
http://www.proni.gov.uk/index/family_history.htm
As would the National Library of Ireland: http://www.nli.ie/en/family-history-introduction.as
Have you tried looking at church records in Loughgall to see if you can find his birth record? If you can find this it would give you his parents? names which would then allow you to search for some possible siblings.
Most Catholic records are held locally so you may need to write to the local parish priest for possible assistance. One website that you may find useful is the Irish Times where they give an overview of what records are available in specific parishes. It also shows you where copies of the records are available. For Loughgallparish, follow this link:
Most surviving Church of Ireland records are still held by the local clergy, although some are in the National Archives of Ireland and others are in the Representative Church Body Library in Dublin. Here are their websites: http://www.nationalarchives.ie/ and http://ireland.anglican.org/about/42
Lists of these surviving registers can also be found at the National Library of Ireland.
Have you tried searching for the Johnsons in Griffith?s valuation? This is a property valuation survey carried out in Ireland 1848-64.You can search it online here:

You could also try contacting Armagh Ancestry to see if they can be of any assistance, however please note that a fee may apply. here is their email: researcher@armagh.gov.uk
