I'm looking for information on the Vaughan family. I have US records stating my ancestor Martin Vaughan was born in Killaloe in 1832. His wife (and my 3rd Great-Grandmother) was a Mary O'Connell, on whom I have no information other than that she was born around 1842 in Ireland. My grandfather seems to think Martin stowed away on a ship the made port in Louisiana sometime before 1853 and subsequently Martin (like many Irish at the time) came up the Mississipi into Illinois using the river system to arrive first in Beardstown, then in Chicago.
My research has yielded no information on the Martin or Mary in Ireland. I know, based on the region, that the name Vaughan is likely to be an Anglicization of the name McMahon but I'm unsure around what time this name change happened (i.e. did Vaughan appear in the early 1800's? Would Martin have been born a McMahon? Or did the name change happen centuries earlier?). I'm also aware Vaughan is an unrelated name of Welsh extraction. Would love to find out which of these two Vaughans my ancestors belonged to.
Anybody have any advice here? I'm utterly lost.

There were 110 households headed by a Vaughan in Co Clare in the tithe applotment records (1825/27), including 3 in Killaloe parish. So the name was clearly in regular use in the county before Martin?s birth. So you are probably looking for a baptism in that name.

Killaoe RC parish records start in 1828 so you might find his baptism. This link will tell you where copies are held:

I have done some research through the Killaloe registers which microfilmed copies are kept at the Clare Library here in Ennis. These microfilmed copies were done by the LDS and they are also held at the National Library in Ireland. You can order these films (you will need the film number) through a local LDS Family Center if there is one nearby where you are living.
I have gone into the National Library website and here are the details of what the Killaloe parish registers have:
Killaloe Baptisms May 24, 1828 - June 19, 1844 P.2477
Baptisms June 23, 1844 - Jan. 21, 1855
Baptisms Feb. 1, 1855 - Dec. 8, 1880
Marriages Feb. 26, 1829 - Sept. 7, 1880If you are not close enough to an LDS Family Research Centre, please get back to me and I will see what I can do.
All the best to you on your research,
Jane.
