Seeking burial record for James Gardiner, born in 1803, died 1876.
(Wife Honora Gardiner, died circa 1893).
Believe James & Honora are parents of James (1841-1919) married to MaryAnn Wilson (m. 1866 at Calry Church).

Also would like to locate burial record for Ellena Gardiner (1871-1874), daughter of James & MaryAnn.

Thank you

  • Hi lyn

There is a record of the burial/death of James Gardiner Sligo 1876 age 73 on www.rootsireland.ie

Parish is St John's Union C of I

You need to purchase credit to view the full record but they have 40% off at the moment.

Eleen Gardiner is also there - same parish.

  • Hi Col

Thank you for the link to James Gardiner and Ellena Gardiner at rootsireland.ie. Any suggestions on locating place of burial and informant information on these two burials? I was hoping to make a connection between James and Ellena (I believe she is James' grandaughter) and locating the graveyard(s).

  • Hi Lynn

There is a St John's cemetery in Sligo.

Did you get the record of Ellen's death also? There MIGHT be more info on that.

  • Hi Col

Yes, we have Ellen's death record as well, but unfortunately those fields are blank on hers too.

When I was in Sligo in June, the Genealogy Cebtre told me about St John's cemetery, but I ran out of time and was unable to visit. I have tried several online sources trying to get burial records or even a list of gravestones. I've had no luck so far - either the cemetery isn't listed or if it is, there is no Gardiner record or headstone listed.

As James' son & daughter-in-law (James & MaryAnn) were married in Calry Church, I even looked into finding a cemetery listing for that church just in case he was buried somewhere other than St John's but it doesn't appear that church has a cemetery (I didn't see one when I visited the church either).

I'm very keen to fill in the blanks for James' burial as it would be good to know who the informant was. James Jr emigrated to Canada before Sr passed away so I was hoping the informant might lead me to more info on other siblings or at least, confirm that the Honora Gardiner we located was his wife.

Do you know if there is a way to contact St John's directly and perhaps get access to records?

thank you SO much for your help so far. It is greatly appreciated.

  • Hi Lynn

I had a response from Paula in Sligo; she asked another friend who supplied the following:

Ellen Gardiner's death record (not sure it has any more than we found)

    https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FRY1-L3T

The Rector at St John's Cathedral is Orpin Williams - if you write to him c/- St John's Cathedral Sligo he hopefully will assist with your questions about the Gardiners.
