I am trying to find out information about my Great Grandfather Thomas Greene.

His son Francis (Frank )Greene (my Grandfather)was born in New York in 1885. His mother was Margaret Lynch.(related to the Lynches from Lynches Cross)

When he was about 10 years old both of Franks parents died and he and his sister Mary Jane Greene were returned to Clare to live with their Grandparents. Frank was sent to live with his paternal Grandfather Francis Greene who lived in Molosky near Mullach Clare. Mary was sent to her maternal Grandparents the Lynch's from Lynches Cross near Quilty. This fact is confirmed by the entries for them in the 1911 census showing them living with these families and being listed as American. Frank them lived the rest of his life in Mullach his sister however returned to New York in her late teens and was never herd of again.

However, and here is my problem, when I research the children of my Great great grandfather Francis Greene from Molosky and using the baptismal records from Mullach church no Thomas Greene is recorded!  I am trying therefore to find out who this Thomas is!  From Frank Greenes NewYork birth certificate it says that his father Thomas Greene was 26 years old when he was born which gives him a birth year of 1869 which would place him between two of the children of Francis Greener Cornelius(1868) and  Mary (1870). Do you think his birth may have been registered at a different church? Any help with solving this mystery would be most appreciated!

I went to www.findmypast.ie which is a subscription site that I belong to. I looked in the Kilrush registration district for birth records for Thomas Greenes. I found an 1867 Thomas Green birth index record and an 1868 Thomas Green birth index record. Both records are below. I think your next step is to write to the General Register Office to get a copy of the correct record. Go to this link http://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Apply-for-Certificates.aspx   Hit the link in the middle of the page for Birth Certificates in English. You will likely get a screen asking for a User Name and Password. Hit cancel and the form should come up. Fill out the form and tell the GRO that you want a copy of the birth record for the Thomas Green whose father was Francis Greene. Provide the volume and page number for the 1867 and 1868 records and mention the Kilrush registration district. A copy of a birth record costs around 4 euros. You can also ask the GRO to e-mail the copy back to you.

In the index to Kilmurry Ibrickane baptisms, there is a Bridget in this family baptised on 24 Nov 1866.  In Ireland Births and Baptisms at familysearch.org, there is a Thomas born on 21 Nov 1866.  The most likely explanation is that there has been an indexing error.  We will soon be able to check this when the National Library of Ireland puts its microfilm online.  The officiating priest may have made the error at the time, or there may have been twins, with one making it into the baptism index and the other into the extracts from the civil registers, but these seem less likely explanations.

This family is the subject of another discussion at

If you obtained Thomas's birth certificate, perhaps you could post it here.

    Good luck with your research

  • Hi , I was wondering did you find your family connection? I'm also looking for a John Green, who's father was Thomas and his mother Anne, not sure if her surname.
