EDWARD GOUGH married MARY DONNELL in Ballylaneen, Waterford Co., in February 1828.  Their child JOHN EDWARD GOUGH was born in Stradbally Parish, Waterford Co., on June 24, 1949.  Address on JOHN's birth certificate is Currabaha.

The family stayed in the Stradbally/Ballylaneen area except for JOHN who immigrated to the USA in 1865.

i suspect that EDWARD is buried in the region.  i think he died between 1865 and 1880.  Can anyone help?

I am visiting Ireland in a few weeks and would like to visit his grave if possible.

thank you!

Pat Gough

Here is a link to the parishes of Stradbally and Ballylaneen. I also located the likely civil death index record for Edward Gough. Stradbally is in the Kilmacthomas registration district. You can get a copy of the record from the General Register Office for around 4 euros. Instructions are below the index record. Enjoy your trip to Ireland.

Go to this link http://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Apply-for-Certificates.aspx In the middle of the page there are links for birth, marriage or death certificates. Hit the link for the form you want. You will likely get a screen asking for a User Name and Password. (This is a program bug that the GRO has to correct). Hit cancel and the appropriate form should come up. Print the form and complete the requested information. Also provide the information from the index record--quarter/year of the event, registration district and the volume and page number where the event is recorded. Make sure you ask for a copy which costs around 4 euros. ( A cert costs closer to 20 euros). You can also ask the GRO to e-mail the copy back to you.

  • If Edward stayed in the Ballylaneen area then the following looks like a likely match for his death on the BMD Index. A cert would give you a date, place and cause death, which might help narrow down the search..

    Name: Edward Gough
    Event Type : Death
    Registration Year : 1870
    Registration District : Kilmacthomas
Age: 63 (est. year of birth 1807)
    Volume : 9 / Page : 511

(Ballylaneen and Sradbally are both in Kilmacthomas registration district)

EDIT - posted just after after the previous reply, which I didn't spot until too late - dont see a way to delete. Mods please remove this - thx

thank you so much, castlemore roscommon.  i sent away for the death record sited in your email and i am convinced this is my husband's gr gr grandfather.  this edward's age and death date co-incide with known family history AND his wife on the certificate is MARY.  i am attaching the file to this message for your to see and perhaps continue to give me help.

i will be in the stradbally/kilmacthomas area on the 19th and 10th of May .... in just 14 days!  we would love to find this Edward Gough's burial place.  can you give me the names of cemeteries in Kilmacthomas?

i have visited the link above, but have not found this edward in the stradbally listings.  i will look carefully again.  thank you for any help you can give me.

If your Edward lived in Ballylaneen, village or townland was Catholic then the first graveyard to check out would be the one adjacent to St. Ann's church in the village. It shows up at least as far back as the 1st edition OSI maps dated c1837.

see also c1890 OSI Map : St. Ann's, Church & Graveyard, Ballylaneen

As far as I can see the same RC parish (Stradbally) also covered the town of Kilmacthomas and possibly based at the time in Balllaneeen, which seems to have been the site of the parish church.

Bear in mind that few RC registers include details of death/burials, and not everyone had headstones, so finding locations of burials can often be difficult.

I'm glad you were able to get the correct death record for Edward. Looks like Shane has pointed you to a good lead on the cemetery. I'm not familiar with the cemeteries since I live in Maryland. Have a great time in Ireland!
