John Horse Sr., born ca 1800, lived in the Donegan and Mount Temple area of Co. Westmeath. It appears he, or earlier family had moved down from the County Longford area. His son, John Jr married Catherine Ganley/Ganly. Five of their 8 surviving children remained around Dunegan, the other 3 settled in the U.S. in Hartford, Connecticut. Interested in anyone of that surname in either County, and in particular the origin of this surname.

Have you already tried ancestry.com or rootsireland.ie? In the link below, you can see where the name was most numerous during the 20th century:

    http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/surname/index.cfm?Surname=Horse&fuse…

There are only 8 mentioned on Griffith's Valuation:

  • Bridget Horse, who married James Nugent in Ballyloughloe in 1858, was my great-great-great grandmother.

I'm not aware of any persons of that surname remaining in the area. There are quite a few descendants of James and Bridget around Mount Temple, however.
