Hello,

I am trying to find a marriage record for some family members of mine in Ireland. The husband was named James Donnelly and his spouse was Alicia/Alice McCullagh. It is believed they got married around 1859 in County Tyrone. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

  • You don’t say what denomination the couple were but I’ll assume RC. If so, a marriage in 1859 won’t be in the statutory records. (RC marriages were only recorded there from 1864 onwards). You will therefore need to search church records for it. About half of the 30 or so parishes in Co. Tyrone are on rootsireland (subscription). Alternatively a more complete set of  RC parish records are on the NLI site (free to view) but unless you know which parish your ancestors came from, you may have to work your way through up to 30 sets of records to find it.

Don’t expect too much information from the entry if you find it. Most RC marriage records from that period just contained the couples names, the date and their 2 witnesses.

  • Chris:

Below is a transcription of the church marriage record in the Killyclogher RC church. As Elwyn indicated, there is not a whole lot of information other than the address of L Badoney which is the civil parish of Lower Badoney. Below the transcription is the 1859 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Lower Badoney. There are nine Donnelly records and many McCullagh records. Likely the fathers of the couple are listed but no way of telling which one. I also gave you a link to the parish of Lower Badoney.
