Looking for information on Michael Sweeney and Suzanna Porter of County Donegal (parish unknown).  They had the following children:  Catherine (b. c1826) and John (b. c1830).  I believe that possibly Michael Sweeney was first married to Ann Quinn and that they had the following children:  Francis (b. c1812) and Mary (birthdate not known).  There were probably other children, but these four emigrated to Quebec, Canada around 1845.  Thank you.

  • Statutory birth registration only started in Ireland in 1864, so you won’t find a birth certificate. Prior to that you need to rely on church baptism records, where they survive.

I assume the family were RC. RC parish records are on-line free on the National Library site:

If you don’t know where in Donegal the family lived you may just have to work through every parishes records. Unfortunately many parishes in Co. Donegal don’t have records for the dates you have given so it’ll be a bit hit and miss. Research in Donegal in the first half of the 19th century can be hard going.
