My great great grandparents Simon and (don't know her name) Hogan were from Tipperary but I believe they were from NorthernTipperary near Balleyspillane.Their son Peter was born around 1825and died in the USA (Minnesota) in 1871) after first living in Illinois and Ohio. He may have had a brother Christopher Hoga as he is listed on one of the census that I have. Peter was married to Julia Farrell, also Irish. She was the daughter of  Richard Farrell and Mary Delaney. I was told that the Hogan parish was Eglish, though I am not sure if this was the civil or Catholic parish as they were also Catholic. I am not sure if Peter and Julia were married in Ireland or the USA but would love to find this out. I am also interested in knowing more about their parents (ie. birth, marriages, deaths, locations). I have found some information online but from the Parish of Uskane entitled Primary Valuation of Tenements listing a Richard Farrell. I am not sure of that date. There is also one from Tipperary North RIding from the Parish of Uskane dated 1851 listin a Simon Hogan as a tenant. I am not sure how to interpret these but I do believe the town listed for Simon is Balleyspellane North. Perhaps Farrells lived close to Hogans and that is how they met. Hopefully these are the right people. Any help you can provide me with will be appreciated. I have information on Peter and his decendants in the USA but am stuck in our Irish genealogy

.Also, do you think I should also join the Tipperary county as I believe this is where the Hogans originated'

  • Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

There is an 1825 Tithe Applotment record (see below) for a Simon Hogan in Ballyspillane townland in Uskane civil parish which relates to the 1851 Griffiths record you located. The RC parish for Uskane civil parish is Borrisokane. Records for that parish start in 1821 http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0765  Borrisokane parish is on Roots Ireland, however, when I searched for baptismal records for children of Simon Hogan, none were found. I also did not find a marriage record on Roots for a Peter Hogan married to a Farrell.

I did find on Roots an 1825 baptismal record for a Judith Farrill in Borrisokane parish. See record below.

  • I'm afraid this is the only birth/baptism record for Peter Hogan 1825 + - 5 years in Tipperary or Offaly on www.rootsireland.ie/:

    Name:Peter HoganDate of Birth:
    Date of Baptism:15-Aug-1828Address:MilfordParish/District:BORRISOKANEGender:MaleCountyCo. Tipperary

There wasn't one for Christopehr with the same parents (or any other children)

You may want to try the RC registers at the National Library (free at registers.nli.ie)

There are 5 lots of Eglish records in various counties including Borrisokane, Tipperary.

By all means re-post to Tipp mentioning the parish to ensure a Tipp parish liaison person has a look for you.

  • Hi Col, Thank you for the quick response. I will follow through on your helpful suggestions. Since I have no sense of how far Richard Farrell may have lived from Simon Hogan maybe you could help me. Is it realistic that Peter and Julia may have met at their church?  How many kilometers are we talking about when looking at the primary value or tenements documents I referred to? THanks for your interest and help. Mary

  • I'm not a Tipperary expert Mary so I'm not the one to ask.

From google searches I couldn't see that any of the parishes were close but I'm not sure I searched correctly - sorry.

  • Mary:

Can you clarify what two locations you want to compare for distance? I know one is Ballyspillane what is the other location?

  • Attached Files

The other one is for a Richard Farrell in Drumnamahane Island Primary Valuation of Tenements (Parish of Uskane). Either that distance from Hogans land or distance from the Catholic church. Hope this makes sense.

  • Mary:

I used Google Maps and it appears that Ballyspellane and Drumnamahane Island are about 8 kilometers apart (5 miles).
