Just found out that my great great grandfather came from Queen's County, now Laois.  Believed to be born in 1830 with the very common name of Patrick Quinn.  Believed to be married aound 1846, also in Queen's County to Margaret Nolan, then went to America on their wedding trip.  Settled in Greenville, WI.

What is my best method to find birth records for Patrick Quinn when all I have are so basic.  WOuld love to know what city, etc., as well as his family back there.  I have been to Ireland twice, but never found anything to assist me.

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated!

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Civil registration started in 1864 for RC marriages so prior to that date only church records are available and not all parishes have records back to 1846. I searched on Roots Ireland for all of Ireland from 1841-1851 and did not find a Patrick Quinn/Margaret Nolan marriage. I looked on the integrated RC parish register data base on Find My Past (subscription site) and found four possible Patrick Quinn baptismal records in Co. Laois (see below). No marriage record found on that site.

  • Bless you, Roger!

Out of the 4 possibilities, one is within a year of what we believed toi be Patrick's birth year, so it seems the most likely.  I am investigating to find out who came up with 1830 as Patrick's birth year.  As far as the marriage goes, it was in an article that it said they were married in Queen's COunty, then took a marriage trip to America.  But another rumor that I am trying to track down, has them meeting on the boat or getting married on the boat.

So thank you for your fine efforts.  It's very exciting!!!  Is there a way that you can tell if Patrick had any brothers or sisters? And pardon my ignorance, but is Athy Parish like saying the name oif the town is Athy? Or is that the Catholic PArish where their church was?

Again, thanks so much for your marvelous assistance, Roger.  Getting any clues at all is MOST exciting!

Here is the parish register for Athy. The records might be in Latin and the handwriting may not be the best. I would look thru the years around 1831 and see if you see other children. http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0459
