I am tracing the family of John Cotter who migrated to the Bristol area about 1839. His approx baptism is 1812 and I am interested in the possible family of James Cotter and Ellen Murphy who were married at St Finbar's in 1810. Children of this marriage are: John (1812), Mary (1815), Edmund (1819), Richard (1820) & William (1826).

Apologies for the long delay in getting back to you. Have you already tried irishgenealogy.ie (a free site) to see if you can find a baptism for John?

Yes there is a possible baptism of a John Cotter, 29 March 1812 at Cork, South Parish son of James & Ellen Cotter (nee Murphy) - not sure whether this is the correct baptism but keeping a look out for alternatives and tracing this group to eliminate if incorrect. The children's names of this family are reproduced in John's family so definitely a possibility. John's father is described as an Innkeeper on his marriage certificate to Sarah Mulcock in 1839 so looking at directories to see if I can find James as an Innkeeper anywhere.

Do let us know if you learn anything new. One issue with early records, as you probably know, is that they can be a bit patchy. You can see at the link here the start dates and availability of records for the parish: Cork Records
