Researching Lillis family history. Family stories say we hailed from County Cork. John Augustin Lillis b.1860/1865 and Catherine Costello b. 1864 were married here in NY, but through other family branch research one theme repeats, people socialized with fellow Village/town  friends from back home while here in the states. I suspect JAL came over without his parents (maybe with cousins or another family, as a young boy). I noticed both Lillises & Costellos were buried in LISCARROLL. It's a reach, but you never know!

Does the family show up in any US Censuses?

Thank you! We've searched Irish genealogy along with ancestry, unfortunately there's not been a document from Ireland yet that matches their full names along with their years of birth. We don't know John's parents or siblings names to verify travel, birth or baptism records. We were hoping if we figured out the church, perhaps records unavailable online would be accessible.

Post 1900 there's plenty of census data here. Origin of birth always plainly says "Ireland." No county or town. He's a bit of a dead end.

    Thank you again for searching!

  • It is a stretch but it's also possible. My Costello connection is through Ellen Costello wife of Charles O'Brien (marriage record not found) parents of John, Johanna, David, Daniel and Charles baptised in Liscarroll between 1829 and 1839. I believe that Ellen Costello came from Ballyagran/Ballygran in Co Limerick about 12 kms from Liscarroll or Churchtown in Co Cork. In the related post from ColCaff there is a baptism record for John Lillis in which the second sponsor is Johanna McCarthy. The mother of Charles O'Brien senior was Johanna Mc Carthy (1857 -1839). Probably not the same one but the name combination may be significant. The O'Brien/Costello family lived on the townland of Ballygrace between Liscarrol and Churchtown. It's difficult to join the dots in this situation but sometimes comparing notes helps.
