My family is Michael Murtagh and Bridget Casey.  They lived in Erra, Co. Roscommon.  They had Thomas, Ann, Bridget, Elizabeth, Marie, Eleanora, Patrick, Julia, Margaret, and Rose.  I have found them in the church records and have all their baptismals.  When I was in Ireland a few years ago, I went to the land records office in Dublin and saw that there are some Murtaghs still living in Erra.  I don't know if there is anymore I can learn about the Murtaghs and Caseys, but I would love to if anyone knows of the family.  I only know Julia married Joseph Hopkins and Margaret married Leonard Lester in New York.  If anyone knows of more information on this family I would be most appreciative.  Thank you in advance!

    Welcome back!

I checked the online Irish phone book and there were no Murtaghs in Erra listed. You may want to check with the Strokestown library branch http://www.roscommoncoco.ie/en/Services/Library/Locations/  or the Church of the Immaculate Concption in Strokestown and see f they have any suggestions. Their privacy rules will likely prevent them from sharing info directly but maybe they can provide your contact info to any Murtaghs in the area.

  • Hi again, Roger,

I don't want to hunt down any Murtagh or Casey relatives in fear of them not wanting the contact.  I am hoping maybe someday someone will come upon the post and respond.  I have photos of my family from an album of my great grandmother, Ellen Brennan, who was married to Thomas Murtagh.  I am sure there are Brennans, Caseys, Murtaghs and Foleys in there. None are identified.  A lesson for all of us, right?   Maybe someday, someone will be looking for a family member and we will find each other.  That is the fun of this researching, now, isn't it?  Met some wonderful people during my journey.  Thanks, Roger.             It is always a pleasure to speak with you.

Thanks, again, for everything you do.

Hello Mary,  my maiden name is Casey and my father's sister Bridget Casey was married to Patrick Murtagh in Erra.  There are 3 Murtagh familes still in Erra, these would be great-grand children of Bridget and Michael Murtagh.  My father's name was Michael Casey.  I remember Patrick Murtagh,, Patrick, Margaret and Anne, there was also a John Murtagh.  Although I do not know much about the families I could find out for you.  Best wishes,  Pamela Casey.

  • OhMyGoodness!  Pamela I would love to talk to you!  Your father is my ggrandmother's brother!?  OhMy.  I'm very excited.  I have pictures from an album of Ellen Brennan Murtagh, Michael's daughter-in-law.  There are pictures in it that I have no idea if they are a Casey, Brennan or a Murtagh.  My e-mail is ombones@yahoo.com.  I would love to send you pictures to see if you recognize anyone.

Thank you so very much for your post!

  • Hi Mary again, forgot to say this is the house where Bridget was born.  It was thatched up till the laste 60s and then my mother had iron put on over the thatch.  It had no gas or electricity or running water.   That was Erra, very remote  and quiet.

  • Seekers of Murtagh/Murtaugh from Roscommon County. My GG Grandfather James Murtaugh was born in 1844 +- in Roscommon somewhere. He emmigrated to the U.S. in 1864. His parents were John Murtaugh and Mary Flynn. I am always following leads or tips for more family info. I know there are a lot of Murtaghs/Murtaughs and not all of us are related but I continue to look. My gedmatch # is A351629. If anyone is interested in responding I would be happy to hear from you.

  • Hi Mary,  I gave you wrong information, it was Mary Anne Casey, my Dads sister who married Patrick Murtagh.  One of the young Murtagh boys asked me to look up who The Four Brothers were who drowned in the Shannon way back in the time of 'The Flood;.  We had a field called the 4 brothers and now the Murtaghs have it.  I have been doing a bit of research and the Casey and Murtagh family trees are like a hedge, impossible to untangle.    Hope the virus is staying away from you, it is bad here in Liverpool.  Best wishes  Will email you and tell you more. xx
