Hi my name is Ryan. I am a Canadian who is looking into the history of my family.

Lucky for me, my mom has already done a lot of research and I am taking over where she left off. Until now we have been using ancestry.ca, but now I am going to be heading to Ireland in just over a week to spend a month learning more about my cultural and family heritage.

The farthest back we can trace is to John Collins and Frances Fanny Jane Ingram, who were married in 1871 at the Mullabrack Church of Ireland, Markethill, Armagh (which is now St Johns Parish Church at the corner of B111 and B78 as far as we can tell). And that's all we know about them, although we know they had a number of kids including my great great great grandfather William Walter Collins.

I've attached a screencap of the family tree and I'm hoping that someone here might recognize something and be able to help me learn more in any way.

    The family appear to have farmed in Mountnorris townland. This looks to be them in 1901:

    A couple of probate abstracts from the PRONI wills site, the latter of which tells you the family were still there in 1959:

    Administration of the estate of John Collins late of Mountnorris County Armagh Farmer who died 25 January 1900 granted at Armagh to Fannie J. Collins the Widow.

    Collins John Archibald of Mountnorris county Armagh farmer died 20 February 1959 Probate Belfast 7 May to Frederick Gass and James Ingram Walker farmers. Effects £1923 18s. 9d.

    The family farm was plot 11 in Mountnorris which was just under 33 acres. Griffiths Valuation for 1864 shows the tenant as John Ingram so I’d guess the Collins family acquired it through the marriage to Frances.

    Plot 11 today is on the Bessbrook Rd just north of Mount Norris village. It’s between the Bessbrook Rd and Tullyallen Rd. You may need to study the Griffiths map to see exactly where it is.

    Thanks so much for your reply, I was actually able to find some more information based on some new information you mentioned in your reply. It seems that John Ingram is the father of Frances Ingram, and we have found some records in Australia for a John Ingram who was married to a Frances (no last name unfortunately) with a daughter named Frances Jane Ingram around the same date of birth we had before (we had no location though). 

    I'm also excited about the idea that there were still Collins in the area as recent as 1959, perhaps they are still there and I will be able to find them in the coming weeks when I visit.

  • Hi Ryan,

      I've just noticed your message.  You must have done quite a bit of research since your last post.  I have Collins relations from Armagh who settled in Ontario Canada around the 1830s.  Have you done any dna testing?
