  • I believe the placename referenced is to the townland of Johnstown in Kill civil parish. The townland is located abt 4 km south south west of Dún Laoghaire (formerly Kingstown) and consists of just over 70 acres and is also the location of a house/estate called Johnstown. see c1840 OSI Map

At the time of Anne's baptism this was part of the Catholic Parish of 'Kingstown  & Cabinteely', but later became part of a new parish based in Cabinteely.

I can see the baptism of Anne, along with several possible siblings between 1819 to 1824, all in Kingstown. These give mother's name as Anne, but unfortunatly none mention her surname. The record for the earlist child I located, Michael 1819, gives Monkstown as resdence, this is is a town located slightly to the west of Dún Laoghaire, and is also the name of the civil parish which includes the towns of  Monkstown and Kingstown/Dún Laoghaire as well as several other smaller towns and about 20 townlands.

Let me know if you do not have these baptisms already and I'll post links.

Kingstown RC records go back to the 1760s but I see no sign of a likely marriage for John and Anne. It's possible that John and his family moved around for work - one of my own ancestors was a Land Steward and was located in two other counties before he showed up in Dulbin.

Unfortunatly very few records survive here on those transported, the best information often comes from Austrailian records.

  • Thank you for your reply.

I do not have those Baptisms for her siblings. Please send the links.

I will check up with our convict records to see if I can find anything about John Mackey.

  • here are the baptisms I found :

Michael MacKey January 1819, Monkstown sponsors (godparents) Michael ... & Anne Ellis (appears to be early in the month, right hand page)

Richard  MacKey  22 February 1821, Johnstown  sponsors 'Charly' Lynch & Julia Brady

Ann Mackey July 1822, Johnstown   - godparents Dan Flanagan & Bridget Ma...    (near the end of the right page)

Richard MacKey  September 1824, Johnstown sponsors John Mackey & Julia Brady  (right hand page)

The first Richard (1821) likely died before 1824, and they reused the name.

At the time of Griffith's Primary Valuation of 1849 for this area most, if not all, of the townland of Johnstown in Kill parish was owned by Lord Talbot de Malahide - so possibly who John worked for if he was a Land Steward at that time. See Johnstown, Kill - Primary Valuation (AskAboutIreland.com)

  • Once again, thank you for all of this information.

This give us some background on my GGGmother. Until recently we only had her wedding certificate in Ipswich in Queensland and it was Registered in Sydney NSW as Qld was not a separate state at that time.

From the information that we have during her second marriage - first husband died- she was a very feisty woman.

    Take care
