Hi

I am in search of any members of the John King - Mary Ann Duncan King Family.

My grandmother's name was Philomenia King born in Mullingar we think about 1905.  She came to the US as a young woman traveling alone.  We have very limited information from her, as she was not very forthcoming. I have her Irish passport and some of the dates have been altered making this search even more challenging.

I know that she had 2 sisters:

Annie and Daisy  I believe that Daisy was married to someone named McGuire and Annie to Conoon,

with some research I think she may have also had a brother named John, but I cannot confirm that information as fact.

I also know that her mother Mary Ann died when my grandmother was a very small child.

other possible related names from random photos and letters:

Peter Carroll  John Joseph Carroll I believe these to be cousins

She also had an Aunt Maryann and Uncle Mark.

I have searched about every cemtery listed on the internet and I have been unable to find any final resting places for either of my great grandparents.  My mother is now getting up in age and has always wanted to do this but prior to the internet it was vitrally impossible an ocean away.  I am hoping that we have some living family that wil see this and reach out.

I appreciate if there is anyone that may have even the slightest bit of information to reach out.

Thank you in advance.

Chrissie

  • Chrissie,

Philomena’s birth was on 19.8.1905 in Clonickilvant, Westmeath. Her father John was a farmer.

This looks to be the family in 1911 with Philomena’s mother dead and replaced by Bridget.

    Same household in 1901:

John King married Mary Anne Duncan on 7.3.1902 in Delvin RC chapel. She died on 15.11.1906 as a result of childbirth. Her son John died 12.11.1906 aged 8 hours.

I dont know where to start, Thank you for the information that you were able to provide me. I am hoping to go back even further do you have any suggestions on where or how to do that.

As I am in the US it is very complicated for me, never having the opportunity to visit Ireland.

Absolutely any information or thoughts that you can share with me will be so very much appreciated.

I am doing this project for my mother and she is beyond excited each time I call her with new information.

Thank you in advance and for everything that you have already provided me.

    Have a Blessed Day

    Chrissie

  • Chrissie,

John King senior died 8.12.1901 aged 73 of heart disease. Son Eugene was the informant. John didn’t leave a will, or not one that required probate anyway.

Eugene was born 26.5.1867 at Clonickilvant. So the family was living there by that date. The mother was Mary Smythe or Smithe (spelling varies). An earlier Eugene was born 20.3.1866 but died later in 1866, so the name was re-used in 1867, as was the custom at that time. John was born 24.11.1869 again at Clonickilvant. Another child was Andrew born 3.2.1864, who may have died in 1875 (there’s a death of a child the right age). And there was Michael born 4.7.1872.

Mary King (nee Smithe) died 16.9.1898 aged 62, of cancer, at Clonickilvant.

I had a look for John & Mary’s marriage, pre 1864 but couldn’t find it in the RC parish records.

I looked in Griffiths Valuation for Clonickilvant for 1854 and there were no King households farming there then. So the family arrived sometime between then and 1864 (when Andrew was born).

I had a look for Annie’s marriage to Mr Conoon. Couldn’t find that. In fact there was no-one named Conoon married in Ireland 1920 – 1940 so I’d wonder if it’s quite right. (Or did they marry outside Ireland perhaps?). I assume Daisy was Mary Josephine. I looked for a marriage for her to a McGuire but again without success.

I had a look in the current phone book for Westmeath but there’s no King listed in the townland today.

You can see where Clonickilvant is using the maps attached to Griffiths Valuation. (Use the search places option). There’s a map from the 1860s and then a slider bar in the top rh corner which allows you to overlay a modern map of the area.

John King married Brigid Coyne on 24.11.1909. See:

    https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1909/10036/5650780.pdf

Her father Christopher died at Ballinlig on 26.8.1897 aged 65. Cause of death was bronchitis. His son James was the informant. This looks to be Brigid’s family in 1901:

    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Meath/Hill_of_Down/Ballinlig/1612570/

There was another Coyne family next door, presumably relations:

    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Meath/Hill_of_Down/Ballinlig/1612571/

The current phone book lists 1 Coyne family still in Ballinlig today. You could try contacting them. (There were only 5 houses in Ballinlig in 1911 so they are surely related). https://www.eirphonebook.ie/?extlink=eircomphonebook
