Searching for anything on Samuel Woods (Protestant) born Ireland 1808-1809.   My Genetic Ancestry says it should be the north. The story is that he trained in France to be a silk weaver, married a Scottish girl, Margaret.  He emmigrated to Canada maybe 1820s/1830s, not sure if marriage was before or after.  None of this information can be verified yet.  We do know that they settled in York, Ontario.  First child born there in 1839, Mary. More children Charles, Robert, Thomas & Margaret, all born in Ontario, Canada.  Wife Margaret died, Samuel remarried and had 2 more children. Mary & Samuel Jr.  He died and is buried in Minnesota.  I cannot find anything firm on ship's passenger lists.  He had to have had siblings.  I have also tried searching for "Wood".  Any help greatly appreciated, his story has eluded us for 30 years.

  • Hello:

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out and many thanks for your post to the message board.

I have done a quick search for you through the Roots Ireland database and there are two entries for the year 1804 and 1814 for a Samuel Woods in the Church of Ireland of St. Anne's of Shankill, County Antrim.  It is not possible to say whether or not either of these two entries are your Samuel Woods.

You should try to more fully research his life in Canada and take particular note of the records of his children and any other transactions including land, property and any other documentation.  His first wife, Margaret might be someone to look at more closely as you may find information about her that gives further clues to Samuel.  Another place to look closely is at Census records.

If you have any further questions, please contact us.  The best of luck with your research!

    Kind regards,

    Jane.

  • Hi There

had a quick look at a county Louth website and there is another Samual Woods in 1832 in Dunbin, County Louth,

this is a parish just south of Dundalk in Louth see http://www.jbhall.freeservers.com/title_deeds_tomlinson_to_young.htm , the Woods name is found also in the North of Louth and in the Cooley Peninsula but as you say it is a northern name.

Also some of the church of Ireland for Louth are free online including Kilsaran which is around Dunbin.

See https://www.ireland.anglican.org/about/rcb-library/anglican-record-proj… Also two other parishes, Stabbanon and Dromiskin / Mansfield town, is ays Armagh as County Louth is in the diocese of Armagh.

    Regards
