Hello----My great, great, great grandmother,Cecelia Gibbons, was born in Glen Casle,County Mayo,in 1790.She married Owen John---sometimes listed as John Owen---McAlpin,who was born in County Mayo. They settled in Westport,County Mayo.Patrick McAlpin, their son and my great, great grandfather, was born in 1818.In 1831,the family sailed from Sligo to Quebec on the sailing ship Eleanor. I am new to this website and have not yet had time to look into parishes, etc.,as suggested. However,if the preceding info sounds familiar to anyone, please let me know.I am going to do more ancestral reasearch using this website and Ancestry.com later. All the best---Tom

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Glencastle is a very large townland (over 2200 acres) in northwest Co. Mayo in a parish called Kilcommon which is a very large civil parish. You can see the location on Google Maps. Records would not be available in that area of Mayo back to 1831 and earlier. Westport is 75 kilometers to the southeast.

You may want to consider autosomal DNA testing to aid in your research. Possibly you will match someone who has Gibbons or MaAlpine connections.
