My gt grandfather George Hoffman b 1830-1832 Ballymacelligot married Fanny Culhane b 1847 Gortagullane.  Fanny was the daughter of Michael Culhane and Sarah Grace Culhane (nee Harding). Sarah Grace Harding was the daughter of Letitia Blennerhassett and Lt Gen Samuel Harding of Harding Grove, Co Limerick.  Letitia was the daughter of Esquire Gerald Blennerhassett of Riddlestown Co. Limerick.  Great grandfather George Hoffman was believed to have been the son of George Hoffman and Sarah and grandson of James Hoffman of Cloghermore.  The Hoffmans and Culhanes were renting Blennerhasset lands in Cahermore, Cloghermore and Gortagullane.

We have been trying to find Sarah's maiden name for 40 years to no avail.  Great grandfather George and the Culhanes left Ireland in April 1866 on the ship 'City of New York' to go to America.  He married Fanny in May 1866 in Nashua New Hampshire, USA.  Their three children; John Onslow b 1867 William James b 1869 and Sarah Jane b 1871 were all born in Hudson, New Hampshire, USA.  Fanny (my great grandmother) died in childbirth in 1873 age 26.  She is buried with her infant son in Ford Cemetery, Hudson, New Hampshire USA.

Great grandfather George left America in 1876 with his 3 surviving children on the ship 'Granada' and sailed to Sydney Australia.  In 1881 he took himself and his 3 children to New Zealand.  He died in 1816 in Te Kuiti, Waikato, New Zealand. He has left hundreds if not thousands of descendants.

DOES ANYBODY HAVE THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION:

What was Sarah's maiden name? & who were her parents?

Does anybody know of great grandfather George Hoffman's siblings and their descendants? & where are they today?

Does anybody know where George and Sarah Hoffman were buried i.e. great grandfather George's parents?

 Kind regards,

Tania Macdonald (nee Hoffman)

  • Hi, Looking over old queries and can find no record in Kerry or Limerick for the name Hoffman, however I checked the free site here and there are church records on it for Kerry and Dublin, also Cork but none come up for Hoffman.

I searched 1780 to 1880 and there are a lot of Hoffmans in Kerry area you mention, plus some in Dublin, no sign of Sarah's marriage but you have nee Harding on the query so not sure which Sarah, they appear to be all  Church of Ireland and they rarely recorded the mothers name on baptisms, so you need the marriage to see if the parents names were included, again unlikely so it may be a lost cause. About 40% plus of C of I records were lost in the civil war.

Search under church records here and sign in, it is free, there is no need to enter a location as thye will come back, I only searched under Hoffman an, d got a lot of hits in Kerry but think the same entry came up twice on occassion, as an aside I see a Poff name and only ever heard of it today where a story in the Irish Times says two men on a Poff from Kerry were pardoned for a murder over a 140 years ago, it is a Palatine name apparently/
