Searching for Eliza Ross from Tannaraggan Co Fermanagh

I looked in Griffiths Valuation to see where Ross households were found in 1862. There were about 40 listed. Nearest I could see to Tannaraggan was Annagolgan, in Clones Parish. A Thomas Ross was farming there in 1862. He had plot 2, a 9 acre farm. This looks to be him in 1901:

They were Church of Ireland. There are 3 Church of Ireland churches in Clones parish, one at Clones itself, another at  Aghadrumsee & Clogh. I don’t know which is nearest to Annagolgan, but all 3 have baptism records for the 1840s. Copies in PRONI (the public record office) in Belfast.

If you think this family is worth investigating, the Sarah A Ross in the census was born Sarah Ann Elizabeth Ross on 16.3.1870 at Annacolgan to Thomas and Rose Anne Lester.

They appears to have married in 1869, registered Clones, (bride was Rosanna Lyster, on Ancestry). That marriage certificate is not on-line  free yet but you can get a research copy for 4 euros. Rosanna looks to have been a widow, previously married to James Wiggins in 1864.

Maybe Tanneraggan was  a small place that is not mentioned in records.

I will check out what you have found. 

I looked through all the T places in my huge Index to Townlands book and Co Fermanagh sure takes the cake for unusual and difficult to pronounce placenames!!

I am thinking that perhaps Tanneraggan was actually Tomregan a Civil Parish in Co Fermanagh.

In the Tithe Applotment books this was written as Temraggan. My ancestor was illiterate so the spelling of her place of origin would have been phonetic and recopied onto the birth register. A handwritten "m" can easily be misread as"nn" and add into the mix a Fermanagh accent. This is the best I can come up with. Any other suggestions most welcome.

In my experience most people from Ireland gave either their townland or parish as their address. Of course there will be exceptions to that but generally that’s what to expect.

The place names are mostly English renderings of the original Gaelic names, so you get names that are pretty unfamiliar to modern eyes. But yes Fermanagh does have some pretty unusual ones. This site tells you about the original meanings etc: http://www.placenamesni.org

The surname Ross is fairly common in Fermanagh. (Most will likely be descendants of Scots who settled there in the 1600s as part of the Plantation). You haven’t said what denomination the family were but judging by the 1901 census of the county most were Church of Ireland (ie Anglican).

Do you have Elizabeth’s parents names, for a marriage or death certificate or some other source, as that may help ensure you trace the right family?

The Church of Ireland records for Tomregan start in 1797 which is helpful. They don’t appear to be on-line anywhere but there is a copy in PRONI (the public record office) in Belfast. However a personal visit is required to view them, so if you can’t get there in person you may need to employ a researcher. Researchers in the PRONI area: http://sgni.net

I don't know much about Eliza other than she came out to Victoria Australia in 1866 and had a child Maria in 1869. Father unknown.

I think the child was adopted by my ancestors . Maria was married and buried in the Church of England.

I have not been able to find a death record for Eliza which is mysterious.
