Hello ..  My ggggrandmother JULIA KEOHANE was transported to Australia in 1850 via the Earl Grey Scheme from the Skibbereen Workhouse.  Julia was born abt 1835 her parents were JOHN KEOHANE and MARY DRISCOLL.  I have found John & Mary as sponsers for one baptism in the Desertserges area and a John Keohane on the Tithe records.  Am I asking too much of the Irish records for more?  I am lucky to be coming to Ireland this June and hope to be able to do some research, but really I don't know where to go to start except the Skibbereen Heritage Centre.  Would appreciate any suggestions and help.  cheers Bren from sunny Australia

  • Hi Bren, welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I had a look at the free record site www.irishgenealogy.ie and searched the church records, there is a baptism for a Julia Keohane 30 August 1830 in Deserterges county Cork with father John Keohane but the mothersname is different,  Biddy (Bridget Lynch)

  • Thank you so much for trying to help! I did find that one too, but my Julia had a really 'colourful'  shall we say life and didn't marry till she was in her fifties and so the info I have regarding parents and her age have come from her through her marriage certificate and not 2nd hand memories of others .. she couldn't read or write all through her life so it's verbal information she is passing on for someone else to fill out the forms and I presume her parents couldn't read or write during their life either .. so I think my Julia might be down on that site with the wrong surname:  Area - Cork & Ross (RC) Parish Clonakilty  JULIA HOULIHANE b. 26 June 1835. Father down as JOHN HOULIHAN mother MARY DRISCOLL. and sponsor THOS NUGENT  &  CATH HOULIHANE ..  I have read that misunderstandings such as this is not unheard of. So that would mean Cath Houlihane was actually John Keohanes mum.  Have also found a Laurence Keohane and wife Catherine on the 1796 Flax Spinning Wheel list for this area Desertserges.  Could Cath Houlihane be Julia's grandmother down as her sponsor?  I don't know the rules for this sort of thing?  If so I might have the line .... ??  I need an unbiased view here ..
