Kind Folks,

I've discovered that a great aunt died in Grangegorman mental hopsital 1 February 1929.  Her name was Susan C. Gilbert of 105 Moyne Road.  Although she was married to Joseph Gilbert I believe they had lived apart for a long time. She took her 9 year old son to live in America in 1909 with her married sister and after that I've lost track of her until I found a death certificate stating that she died in Grangegorman mental hospital of pneumonia.

I've done  internet research about Grangegorman records, but can't seem to find where they wound up.  It looked like they were going to be given to the National Archives about 10 years ago, but then I saw some articles that said the Archive was going to merge with Irish manuscripts or something like that and I also found several articles bemoaning the fact that these records are not being taken care of. Do you have any knowledge of where the records might be and if so how I could access them remotely?

Thank you very much for your help with this.

Regards,

Laura Chambers

  • Hi Laura

I assume the records are in the National Archives soon to be incorporated in the National Library, see http://www.nationalarchives.ie/ and https://www.nli.ie/ The National Archive site was not responding just now but assume is temporary.

My understanding is that medical records are not released or you require permission to view them and then have to have good reason, so they are definitely not online to view and would be difficult to view anyway. Will check it again in a week or two to ensure I am correct but have been told that and you can mail the archives anyway.

The death record which I assume you have is free to view online.

The hospital was closed some years ago and has recently been redeveloped as a campus for the Dublin Institute of Technology.

  • Pat,

Thank you very much for your help- and clarfication.  Since I'm not a a direct descendant, I will pass your information along to my second cousin who is her great grand daughter-  Perhaps she will be able to get the information on her health records.  It has been almost 90 years since her death.  Everyone who helps at Ireland reaching out is so wonderful.  It's so helpful for me here in the United States.

    Best Wishes,
