Hello,

I am looking for information or possible help learning the family line of James Clancy born around 1830 who immigrated to Albany New York 1852.  He married Honorah Downey 1859 and had two children, Catherine b. 1860 and John b. 1861 while living in Albany. The 1860 census says he was a blacksmith.  The family stories says he served in the civil war, but I have not been able to locate his service records.  James Clancy is a very common name.  The couples third child, Dennis was born in Ontario Canada 1863.  In  1865 their 4th child, Mary was born in Cincinnati, Ohio.  James b. 1867, Daniel 1869 and Honora b. 1871 followed.  James died 1901 in Cincinnati Ohio.  There is a group of decendents from James and Honora confirmed by AncestryDNA.  The interesting part is there are at least 7 DNA matches that connect us to Denis Clancy baptized 1832 st. Flannan’s Killaloe, County Clare Ireland d. New South Wales Australia and Mary Clancy baptized 1835 St Flannan’s Killaloe, County Clare, Ireland d. Troy, New York. ( I have a record stating James had a sister named Mary who lived in New York) Baptism records show Denis Clancy and Catherine Connell are parent of both children.  I have also located baptism records for 2 additional children for this couple, Michael baptized 1836 and Patt baptized 1841.  I have not been able to find a record for a child named James.  However, I have found a baptism record that doesn’t show the child’s name with parents listed as Denis Clancy and Catherine Canoll.  The date is hard to determine as well, I think it is 1829.    I can’t help to hope this is James.  Does anyone have any ideas how to determine the relationship of Denis Clancy and Catherine Connell to James Clancy?

Thanks,

Tara

  • Dear Tara:

Thank you for your post to the Ireland Reaching Out message board.

I have taken a look at a transcribed copy of the parish register and I see a baptism entry for a Clancy (unfortunately the first name is not clear) with parents listed as Dennis Clancy and Catherine Carroll.  Again, this is a transcription and the surnames of Carroll and Connell may be due to errors.  The link to the transcription is below:

    https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000634738#page/10/mode/1up

It is Entry No. 151 and it would appear that the child's name was never written down.

The family's residence was Ballynavin (Ballynevin) in Killaloe.  Unfortunately, the baptism register only began in 1828, so earlier children will not be listed.

I do see the listing for Dennis Clancy with parents listed as Dennis Clancy and Kitty Connell.  The townland is the same and the parish listing is noted as O'Briensbridge.  (very close to Killaloe).  Here is the link to that transcription:

    https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000634738#page/38/mode/1up

Here is the listing for Mary:

    https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000634738#page/55/mode/1up

    There may be others.

I did see that there were other Clancy families living in Ballynevin.

You can view the parish register for Killaloe at this link:

Many of the Clare parish registers have been voluntarily transcribed through the Clare Past Forum.  You can access that link through the Clare Library website where you will find a number of helpful resources to view.  That link is also below:

There are also other members onsite who may be able to add to this post.  Hopefullyt they will reply.

  • Hello, Honorah is my 3rd great grandma and James is my 3rd great grandpa. Are you looking for information on their son named James Clancy or the James Clancy that is married to Honorah? I live in Cincinnati, my grandmother is also still alive 97 years old, I could ask her what she knows.

  • Also Dennis Clancy is James and Honara’s son. Catherine Connell is Dennis’s wife. So James Clancy would be her father in law. Also I believe her last name is Carroll not Connell.

  • Hi Emily,  I must have missed your first reply :(  Thank you for responding.  I believe James Clancy Sr  parents were Denis Clancy and Catherine Connell.  The only proof I have is all of the DNA connections to the couples other children’s decendants.  I’ve not been able to find any records to confirm this.  I know James burial record lists James and Bridget as his parents, but I believe that was an error.  Every Clancy DNA match leads to Denis and Catherine.          James and Honora did have a son named Denis who married Kate Carrol.  Catherine Clancy, daughter of James and Honora is my line. Which child of theirs is your line?
