Hello,

I am looking for birth information on my great-grandfather, Patrick Sweetman, born approx. 1801 and his wife, Elen Brenock, born 1800(?).  I have a marriage record from the Roman Catholic parish of Callan for their marriage on 17 Nov 1828.  I can find no other records.  Can someone suggest a source where I can find this information?

I am also looking for the names and birth dates of any children which they may have had which were born in Ireland.  They emigrated to the US around 1840.

Thank you for any information which you might be able to provide.

Best regards,

Robert Sweetman

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I checked the subscription site Roots Ireland and there was no Patrick Sweetman baptismal record around 1800 in Kilkenny. There was a 1796 baptismal record for an Ellen Bronougue in Thomastown RC parish. I did find two baptismal records for children of Patrick and Ellen. See below.

  • Hello,

Regarding Patrick Sweetman, I have found a Baptismal Record for a Pat Sweetman at St. Finbarr's RC Church in Cork on 13 October 1801 (record indentifier CR-RC-BA-52830).  This is the only Pat Sweetman found in the searches between the years 1795 to 1805.  I am fairly confident that he was born in 1801, as that was the birth year he listed on his imigration form into the USA.  I am therefore wondering if this is my great-grandfather.  He shows up in a wedding certificate in Callan, Kilkenny in 1828.  Callan is about 100 km from Cork City.  This does not seem very far to an American, but does it make sense for a 19th century Irishman?  Is there any way to increase my confidence that this is my ancestor?

The Baptismal Record also raises other questions:

    1.  His address is listed as "Wexford Mila".  Is this in County Wexford?  That is quite a distance from Cork City.

    2.  His father is listed as "JNO Sweetman".  Is this an abbreviation for Jonathan?

Anyway, thanks for any light you might be able to shed on this for me.
