Hi everyone!  Very new to Irish genealogy research and it's proved to be quite challenging so far!

I have a will from Honora Taylor McDonald (b ~1830, d 1873) in Brooklyn NY that mentions her mother Mary Lynch in County Cork.

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QS7-8995-QV

So I found Mary Lynch's will (see the attached files):

1.  in 1866 she lived on Great George's st

2.  when she died on 4 June 1872 she lived on Barrack St.

3.  at the time of writing of the will (1866), she names 3 living children:  Denis Lynch, who is in the Cork District Lunatic Asylum, Honora Taylor Mcdonald who is in Brooklyn NY, and William Taylor, who is in New York.

So from this I guess I'm looking for a birth record of Denis Lynch (sometime after 1830) and a marriage record of Mary Unknown to Unknown Lynch.  Sadly, I've had no luck finding an obituary for Mary Lynch since the Cork Examiner is not available in 1872.  I did find a newspaper advertisement looking for creditors in 1873.  In my search of the birth records so far I found a Denis Lynch born to Denis Lynch and Mary Linehan in 1841.  I was not able to find birth records for Honora or William, or a marriage record for Mary Linehan to a Taylor.

Any advice as to how to proceed from here?  I am sending off for a death certificate for Mary Lynch.

Thanks!

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

So Mary was married twice. She married Taylor first and then Lynch after Taylor died? I assume you are using the free site www.irishgenealogy.ie for searching for church records for Cork city?

I did some searches on that site but came up empty so far. There are four RC parishes in the city at that time. St. Finbar's (Cork South) has records back to the late 1700s but St. Peter and Paul's has a gap in baptismal and marriage records (1811-1824 for baptisms and 1817-1835 for marriages). If your ancestors attended this church, the gapds may explain problems finding records. St. Mary's has records back to the 1700s. St. Patrick's record start in 1831 for baptisms and 1832 for marriages. Possibly that was the church was founded  Here is a link to the NLI site

If you have not yet sent the death record request, you may want to wait and save money. The same site www.irishgenealogy.ie  under the Civil Records TAB has death record images startin in 1879 but we expect that later this year the records for 1864-1878 will be added online. marriage and birth records are also on that site but full civil registration dis not start until 1864.

  • Thank you Roger for all the helpful information!  I've been using findmypast to search the parish records but I will check the sites you mentioned as well.  And I will hold off on the death record request too.  Thank you again!
