I have been trying to find where the parents of John Cahalane baptised 3/4/1831 Coronea Skibbereen, came from. His parents were Peter Cahalane & Ellen Hegarty/Heagerty, the parish secretary I wrote to says she could not find any other children for them & the marriage register only begins in 1838 so could not look for a marriage for John's parents. John's God parents were Pay Goggin & Ellen Hegarty.

John Cahalane came to Australia in 1863 arriving in Brisbane Queensland where he took up land & built a farm on the banks of Oxley Creek, Corinda (just outside Brisbane) On every document that I have of him here in Australia he states he was born Skibbereen except except for his marriage to Mary Ryan on 26/08/1866. On this document he says his place of birth was County Kerry Ireland (no particular place named).

So I was wondering if that is where his parents came from & how easy would it have been for them to travel to Skibbereen. John was a farmer here in Australia & he stated his father was also a farmer in Ireland. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Kathy

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I would be inclined to disregard the Co. Kerry indication on the marriage record and stick with Skibbereen.  As an aside, it is at least 50 kilometers from Co. Kerry to Skibbereen. Killarney is 80 kilometers from Skibbereen.

The baptismal records for Skibbereen start in March 1814 https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0096  Likely his parents would have been born before that date so no baptismal record would be available.

You may want to add John's story to our XO Chronicles site and possibly someone will see a connection  https://www.irelandxo.com/ireland-xo/history-and-genealogy/ancestor-dat…

Also, DNA testing should be considered.
