Hi everyone,

Recently through this site I was able to trace roots in various Dublin parishes re: Stephen Griffin and Jane Ward, their child Nicholas. Much of this family history takes place in Swords, Howth, and Balbriggan.

Now I have had a few more conversations regarding DNA and see that it is possible I cannot find more information for Stephen because the Griffin family may have arrived in Dublin from either Donegal or somewhere in western IRL. This is only a hypothesis at this point. The other is poor record keeping. Is there a good way to find migration records possibly from moving around IRL? It's possible Stephen as a child or his parents are from Donegal or Kerry/Clare.

Any suggestions or direction would be great and thanks.

  • Dear Steve:

Thank you for your post to the Ireland Reaching Out message board and we are delighted that we have been able to assist you with your research.  Would you consider creating an Ancestor profile for one of your ancestors under the XO Chronicles?  Ancestor profiles are a great way to try to add to your research as they are widely read by our members, they are updated weekly on the website and often, others are researching the same families. Please be sure to include a link to your family tree if it is online through one of the websites (and if you wish to do so).   You can create one at the link below:

In addition, you may also be able to find further information about other children born to Stephen Griffin and Jane Ward using the following websites:

    https://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/

The above site is the Church records site of the Government Irish genealogy website and the church records predate the Civil Registration of 1864.  While the number of church records is limited on this site, the Dublin, Cork (part), Kerry and Carlow records are here and they are FREE to view.

    http://www.rootsireland.ie/

This site (also known as Roots Ireland) is a subscription site.  You can pay for a day, month or year.  These records include church (various denominations), civil and Catholic records and they are transcriptions.  This site can be very useful to search as you can input the parents names and view all counties that are on this site.  It is important to note that if there is a microfilm (blue button) at the bottom of the record, you should definitely check that the digitised record states the same information as the transcription.

If you have any further questions, please let me know.

    Kind regards,

    Jane.
