Greetings. I've been able to piece together some of my ancestry through census and other searches and am 90% certain my great-great grandparents were John Ryan and Ellen (Walsh) Ryan.
What I know so far: John was born in Ireland around 1815 and his wife Ellen around 1820. I do not know which counties they were from. They both immigrated to St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada and were married in 1837. I believe they had 6 children in Newfoundland (including my great grandfather, Michael), and then emigrated down to Biddeford, Maine, USA. Does anyone have any ideas on how I can figure out their counties and parish? I'm stumped. Thank you!

Eamonn, this is awesome! Thank you. I had thought they might've been married in Newfoundland, but I really don't know. Is there a way to find out if this couple left for Canada, or any other records that might prove they are the same Newfoundland/Maine-bound ancestors? My family is going to be excited to see this part of the puzzle solved. Thanks again! What a great service you offer.

Hi Suzanne . . .
Glad we were of assistance . . . .
There are NO records of travel . . from that time . . however . . I did a further search of a (Church) . . TAX register ..known as . " Tithes Applotment 1823 - 1837 ".
http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/index.jsp
This was a tax on all property owners . . for the upkeep and support . . of the Church of Ireland . . in their own locality.
There I found three Ryan notations . . for that Townsland in Kilkenny (see below )
___________________________________________________________________
I then searched " Griffiths Valuation " 1848 -1864 (another tax roll ) NO Ryans listed . . .
________________________________________________________________________
I then moved on to search for Ryan's . . possibly still living in Glenmore . . in the National 1901 census . . . NO Ryans .
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++.
So . . there is the best we can assist you with . . .. those Ryan's ( they weren't to know it ) were getting out . . just before the Famine 1845 - 1850 aka. . (An Gorta Mór) . . . .
Are there family Ryan decendents still living in NFland ???

If you had Ancestor pictures . Stories . or memorabilia . . .you can post them on our IRO pages . . .

Thanks Eamonn! I'm going to work with what you gave me and see if I can track down some Newfoundland relatives. I know a lot more than I did yesterday. So appreciate your help.
