Hi, I am searching for any Irish family of my great grandfather, Hugh Moloney, who was baptised in April, 1863 in Imogeela, Glenane County Cork. His parents were William Moloney and Mary Donovan who I think were married in a Roman Catholic church in Conna, Cork on 28th February, 1856.

They had 8 children who were Maurice, John, Margaret, Mary, Bridget, Hugh, William and Michael. I would appreciate any information or help you may be able to give me

Thanking you,

Colleen Szulik

  • Dear Colleen:  Thank you for your post to the Ireland Reaching Out message board.  I have found a baptism record for Hugh Moloney who was indeed baptised in Imogeela parish (also known as Castlemartyr) in 1863.  His sponsors were John Molony and Margaret Donovan.  The transcription records are available on Roots Ireland which is a subscription website.  You can also view the records (for free) on the National Libarry of Ireland website and the link is here:  https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0059  The dates for the other children are below:

Bridget  14 December 1861.  Her residence is noted as Glenane and this townland is the address for the family. The NLI link is here:  https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000634049#page/114/mode/1up

Mary 7 August 1860.  Residence is noted as Glenane.  https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000634049#page/109/mode/1up

    Margaret 17 April 1859  https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000634049#page/105/mode/1up

John  10 February 1858.  His residence is noted as Glenbeg.  https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000634049#page/103/mode/1up

Maurice 3 February 1857.  Residence noted as Glenane.  https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000634049#page/101/mode/1up

I did not find baptism records for other children born to this couple in Imogeela.

I did find a marriage record for William Moloney and Mary Donovan in Conna and this marriage date was 28 February 1856.  As the tradition was that the bride always married in her home parish, Conna is most likely Mary Donovan's home parish.

Conna is just north of Imogeela, and the parish registers are also on the National Library of Ireland website at this link:  https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0037  The townland may be Glenane More as I note that Glenane More in the civil parish is Mogeely.  You can view this on the link:  http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/

If you have any further questions, please let me know.

    Kind regards,

    Jane

  • Hi Cate,

Sorry for the late reply to your message, I was away on holidays. Thank you for your message. My great grandfather is also Hugh Moloney of Imogeela Parish. His son Michael Moloney born in 1892 in Northcote, Melbourne was my grandfather. My mother was his daughter Marion Mary Moloney. They spelt their last name as Maloney which is incorrect. I would appreciate any information you may be able to share with regards to the family in Ireland. Thank you once again for connecting with me.

    Kind regards,

    Colleen

  • Hi Colleen, Lovely to hear back from you. I was always aware that my Grandmother Elizabeth had a brother Michael that moved to Qld. I had searched the Qld records and found your mother and her siblings, so I knew that there was a family there, but never knew about your generation.  Are you still in Qld...I now live in Geelong, Vic. I am not sure if you know about Hugh's siblings that immigrated to Australia and I do have information about them. I have some general information about those that stayed in Ireland but I have been told (I have not been able to confirm) that our Moloney family had died out. Happy to share that with you as well. I also have a little bit of information about Margaret Therese Goggin - Hugh's wife and our great Grandmother. And some old photos of them if you would like a copy. A lot of the information I have is on my Ancestry Public Tree. Are you on Ancestry as that might be an easier way of sharing some of this information, including copies of documents. Alternatively happy to give you my email address. Just let me know what you think and I will get back to you.  Best Regards for now Cate

  • Hi Cate,

Thank you for your prompt reply. It is wonderful to hear that you live in Geelong, Vic. My family and I live at Hoppers Crossing, just a short distance from you. I haven't join up to Ancestry as yet as I started searching my family tree about 4 years ago and used our local library. I have only started it up again due to family demands. I will definately have a look at your Ancestry Public Tree but would love any information and photos you would like to share. I am happy to give you my email address : tomdooley8@outlook.com. It is really fantastic to hear from you and know that you are a part of our Irish family heritage. Thank you once again and hope to hear from you soon.

    Kind regards,

    Colleen
