Hi,

I am researching the Morrow family in the Ballyjamesduff area in Cavan. I am trying to find Hugh Morrow (b. 1803) and his wife Anne´s family. The family were all Protestant and lived in the townland Derrylurgan. I hope to find the families that the Morrows are connect to.

Thank you!

  • Dear csantia213:

Thank you for your query to the Ireland Reaching Out message board and welcome.  The best place to start your research is to contact the Representative Church  Body Library in Dublin.  Their website address is here:  https://www.ireland.anglican.org/about/genealogy  I believe that the COI registers for Ballyjamesduff may be held at the library, and if that is the case, the archivists there will be able to assist you.

In addition, you can use the Civil records avaiable through the Irish Genealogy website to try to trace the family forward.  Their website is:  www.irishgenealogy.ie and the records or tab that you are interested in is the Civil Records tab.

You can also track this family through Griffith's Valuation which is available online through the Ask About Ireland website:  http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/   You may be able to then trace any family who remained through to the 1901 and 1911 Census Records which are available online through the National Archives of Ireland.  http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/

I will also copoy this post to a Cavan volunteer who may be able to add further assistance to you.

    Kind regards,

    Jane

  • Hi Csantia213 (and thanks Jane for your tips),

While I can't assist you directly with your question re Hugh and Anne Morrow, I'm in the very early stages of trying to track down my Cavan Morrow ancestors too. So I'm writing to you in case either of us find out anything - as our relatives may or may not be fairly closely related.

My Morrow connection: My great great grandfather migrated to Australia in around the late 1840s or early 1850s and was born between about 1827 and 1832 (he's recorded his age differently on marriage and on son's birth certificate. He was illiterate).  His mother's maiden name was Elizabeth Morrow (stated on Thomas Richards senior's marriage certificate) as "Bessie" Morrow) and she married William Richards in Ireland. Given Thomas Richards age, his Mum, Elizabeth Morrow, would probably have been born approximately between 1800 and 1810.  However, they were from Killeshandra, not Ballyjamesduff.

I'm planning to visit Ireland and Cavan (first time)  for 2 or 3  days in January and hope to find out more either before I go or while I'm there.

    Kind regards,

    Julie Reif
