Hello

I am looking for any information on the Tynan family.  My ancestor, Jane Tynan was born in Toomna in 1840 ish.  She married John Robert Higginson in 1869.  Any help is appreciated!

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I searched on the subscription site Roots Ireland and did not find a baptismal record for a Jane Tynan. I assume she was RC? The RC records for the Tumna/Ardcarn area start in 1843 so perhaps Jane was born pre-1843. Do you know her parents names? I also did not see a marriage to a John Higginson. Was the marriage in Canada or Ireland?

From your other message on Higginson, I see that Jane was Church of Ireland. Unfortunately, the 19th century Toomna reocrds were lost in the Public Records Office fire in Dublin in 1922.

    Hi Lorraine

Welcome to the Co. Roscommon Co. Leitrim IrelandXO Community!

As Jane Tynan and John Robert Higginson had a shop in the town of Drumshanbo, Co. Leitrim, please join the civil parish of Kiltoghert (which also covers the market town of Carrick-on-Shannon adjacent to Tumna) and post as much as you can to the Ancestor Chronicles there (for both Higginson and Tynan). This will get you the best results over time.

I have got you started with a chronicle for JR Higginson, please edit that with more details as you go. It helps to post your queries there as well, (so that parish members not monitoring the message board can receive notifications and also pitch in).

    HIGGINSON OF CORNAMUDDA

What I can tell you is that John Robert Higginson, through his nephew Frederick Higginson (Census 1901) was the brother of Thomas Higginson of Cornamudda, Drumshanbo. Thomas' records confirm their father was Francis Higginson of #2a Cornamuddagh in Griffith's Valuation 1857, and their mother, Eliza, lived on until 1896. (See the ancestor profile for Thomas for sources and links).

There were 4 farms in Cornamudda and the Higginson farm #2 was held in partnership by William, Francis and Robert Higginson, and Robert Coyle (presumed married to a Higginson). William Higginson  & partners were recorded in Cornamuddagh in the tithe applotments of 1834. These "partners" were clustered together in a family rundale village (or clachan) near the roadside.

So John Robert Higginson was born in farmhouse 2a (see attached)  It does look like there are traces of the old Higginson settlement still there. See googlemap street view here of the gate leading into it.

    TIMMONS aka TYMON OF SHANBALLYBAUN

Jane Tynan was recorded as Jane Timan at the births of her children in the 1870s. So do also consider Tymon / Timon / Tyman / Timmon / Tyms / Timmons.   I suspect she was from the Roscommon side of Carrick-on-Shannon (technically Tumna) albeit Carrick is mainly considered to be Co. Leitrim (which may explain the confusion in county of origin).

What I find interesting is that Jane strove to keep the given name Charlotte in the family. Her first daughter to be christened Charlotte (b1875) did not survive and so she gave the name to the daughter born in 1881 (who also died young of TB). In the 1911 Census, her granddaughter Charlotte Thomas (dau of Harriet Higginson) was living with her. Jane (Tynan/ Timon / Timan) Higginson, widowed, moved to the town of Ballinamore (where her daughter Harriet Thomas was married to a Leitrim Railway employee) so please also join the civil parish of Oughteragh and post as much as you can for the Higginson-Thomas ancestors there.

The Charlotte lead is also a strong one. John Tymon of Shanballybaun, TUMNA (Church of Ireland) names his daughter Charlotte in 1902.

John Tymon of Shanballybaun (1839-1911) bachelor, married Fanny aka Frances Dennison in 1901 (1901 Census; 1911 Census). In Feb 1911, John Tymon of Shanballybaun (age 72) husband of Frances died of old age, just before the Census was recorded. This means that the age given in the 1901 Census was in error.  In 1914, Frances Tymon (widow) of Shanballybaun married Thomas Moore of Croghan. Charlotte Tyman b.1902 married 1933 Frederick Cosgrove of Ballysodare Co. Sligo.

John Tymon (1839-1911) was the son of Peter Tymon of Shanballybaun, farmer. I suspect that Peter's wife was a Charlotte and that your Jane and John Tymon may be siblings, and that their mother was a Charlotte. It may be worth investigating.

Do post to the Tumna Chronicles (for Tynan) to discover more. The more you post, the better able we will be to help you find your way home to Tumna!

  • Michael Tynan born around 1830 in Fuerty. His parents may have been Michael and Rosa. It appears Michael came to New Jersey in the US around 1852 and married Mary Kennedy from County Roscommon in January 1853. Mary's dad may have been Thomas Kennedy.

    Any info would be appreciated.
