Hello, I am trying to find William John Todd and Elizabeth Todd who were married at the Killbride chruch in 1863. The marriage cert states that their residence was in Grange of Doagh, but I was told that one was born in Co. Antrim and one was born in Co. Down. Fromt the 1911 census Elizabth states that she was born in Co. Antrim. Both of their father's names are John Todd - but is not the same John Todd.

I have been to Ballyclare Presbyterian Chruch and Killbride Church and was unable to get any information regarding this couple. Any guidance or information would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance, Joanne

Todd

  • Joanne,

I assume this is your family in the 1911 census:

I note that Elizabeth completed and signed the census return herself, so presumably she knew where she was born. Therefore I’d be inclined to accept she was born in Co. Antrim.

Tradition was to marry in the bride’s church so Kilbride Presbyterian may have been Elizabeth’s family church. However she was born around 1842. Unfortunately Kilbride Presbyterian has no baptism records earlier than 1848, so if that is where she was baptised, you won’t find any record of it. (Statutory birth registration didn’t start in Ireland till 1864).

I see from Dorothea’s birth certificate (27.5.1875) that the couple were living in Ballyclare at that time. You may be able to locate their house in the Valuation revision records on the PRONI website.

  • HI Todd Researchers,

Todd family historians from all around the world, but sharing roots in Co Antrim are collaborating on an effort to sort out the relationships of the various Todd branches - mysteries created by the destruction of so many records in the fires of 1922.    The sorting out process consists of securing male DNA samples from a living male to see which Todd family they belong to and then getting autosomal DNA to see who their fifth cousins are - thereby linking branches that previously could not be linked.

The Ballycastle Todds have a sample from a desc of Daniel Todd b 1798 who came to america in the 1840s.

The Dunluce/Coleraine Todds have numerous samples all showing a DNA pattern identifical to that of the Todds of Co Down.

The Todds of Ballyalbanagh, Coggry, Rashee and one family from Glynn all have the same DNA pattern and it matches that of the Mary Todd Lincoln group of Todds and other immigrants to colonial and early nationhood America.

The Drummadaragh Todds have a pattern that is only slightly different from the Todds of Ballyalbanagh etc.

So if any one on this site is interested in using DNA to refine your lineage back in time, please contact me at RMcMurtry@baymoon.com.

There is a sale going on in America for which samples are almost half price - good through Dec 28.
