Does anyone know if birth records exist for Lisdoonvarna Parish prior to the online microfilm which started in 1854? I am trying to locate any birth records on my great grandfather, Patrick Hughes, who was born in about 1849 in Lisdoonvarna. There is no middle name and his father's name was also Patrick.

I will actually be taking a trip there in a couple of weeks and wondered if there was a place I could stop at like the county library to see if any records existed.

I know that he married Bridget Murphy in Killeenadema in 1875 and died in the Galway County Home in Loughrea in 1936 at age 85.

Thank you all in advance for your help.

  • Hi Kevin:

Thank you for your query to the Ireland Reaching Out message board.

As you already know, the Lisdoonvarna parish registers only begin in 1854 for baptisms and in 1860 for marriages and they are available online for free under the NLi website.  https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0630

The Kilshanny parish registers are not available online so that it is a matter of attending the parish office to see if it is possible to view these registers.  I would recommend that if you are doing so, you would physically go there and have your information written down so that you can see specific families, years, names, etc.

You might find other helpful information through the Clare Library website which is available here specifically for Kilshanny parish (the civil parish for Lisdoonvarna)

    http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclare/places/kilshanny.htm

You should also note that the parish registers that exist for Kilshanny/Lisdoonvarna have been transcribed and are free to download on the library website.

I know that there is a North Clare Historical Society who is active and I will make enquiries for you about Hughes connections there.

If you are coming to County Clare and you would like to meet in the Local Studies Centre in Ennis (which I would highly recommend that you visit anyway), please let me know.  You can email me directly at:  jhalloranryan@irelandxo.com

    All the best,
