Garland family of County Louth

Hello Barbara, there is no baptism on Roots Ireland to suit your dates in Louth, there is a Walter Gernon baptised in 1803 to a mother Margaret Murphy and father Walter, there is also a Rose; Anne; John; Mary and James born to these parents from 1799 to 1811 all Haggardstown, there is also a father Walter Gernon, Mother Cathe or Catty Clark  who have a Michael; Ann; Francis and a Mary also, it is not a 2nd marriage as the births overlap. This family are in Verdonstown. 

There is also a Walter Garland born in Wexford in born to a William Garland and a Bridget Clery , Clery is sometimes a variant of Clark, this is in 1795. None of date are inline with yours even the months are out etc. 

Variants on the name include Gernon, Garland, Gartland, Gartlandy and can occur in the same family for different births. There are a number of queries for this names on this site in this area if you search under the various names.

According to a Haggardstown, Louth Catholic Parish baptism transcription at the Find My Past (FMP) website, “Watt” Gernon was baptized on 1 February 1779 and was indeed the son of Jon Gernon and Mary McTegart. Attached to the transcription is a link that will take you to a copy of the original baptism record for Walter in the Haggardstown baptism registers. The baptism, marriage, and burial registers for the Haggardstown Catholic Parish are held by the National Library of Ireland in Dublin. You will see two facing pages of the baptism register. Walter’s baptism is the first entry at the top of the right-hand register page. You can enlarge the page by means of round icons in the upper center/ right of the screen. The icons are white with green backgrounds. You can also access the full-screen function by clicking on the last icon on the right with the two arrows pointing northeast and southwest.

It is very difficult to read the names of Walter’s godparents in the register. The last name of the godfather however, appears to be Reidy. The first name of the godmother looks like “Cath,” for Catherine. Her last name looks like it begins with the letters, “Car…” but I couldn’t make out the full last name.

I didn’t find the baptisms for anymore children of Jon Gernon/Garland and Mary McTegart at the FMP website.

But I did find the marriage transcription at the FMP website for Jon Gernon and Mary McTegart, showing the marriage took place in the Haggardstown Catholic Parish on 27 February 1778. The address County Meath may actually mean that both Jon and Mary were from County Meath, rather than just Mary coming from County Meath.

Based on your information Barbara I also found the marriage record for Walter “Gerron” and “Cathne Clerk.” They were married in the Catholic Parish of Togher on 12 April 1804 which is the date you have for their marriage. The transcription has the address of “Wyanstn” as the residence for Cathherine.

Their marriage is on the left-hand register page, 2nd entry below the April subheading. Because of the handwriting I couldn’t decipher the last names of the witnesses to the marriage. The first name of one of the witnesses looks like Tom. The first name of the second witness looks like Pat.

Of the 5 children of Walter and Catherine Clark that you mentioned in your query to Ireland Reaching Out, I found the FMP baptism transcriptions of only three, including Ann, Michael, and Margaret. The transcriptions are compiled from the church registers. There are only three transcriptions, probably due to portions of the Togher baptism registers being illegible, or possibly gaps in the Togher baptisms from 1804 forward.

The FMP transcription for Ann Gernon shows she was baptized on 24 May 1807. The residence of Ann and her family is “Verdonstn,” which of course stands for Verdonstown. Her parents are Wat Gernon and Catty Clark. See: https://www.findmypast.com/transcript?id=IRE%2FPRS%2FBAP%2F2436249

Scroll down the page until you come to the number 24 in the left margin of the page to locate the baptism record. The names of Ann’s godparents appear to be James Burns and Judy Hardman.

The residence of the family is transcribed as, “Werd?” which I believe means Verdonstown.

But, you won’t find Michael’s baptism recorded on July 20. The transcription is incorrect. Michael’s baptism actually took place on 20 August, and can be found toward the bottom of the left-hand register page just to the right of the second Number 20. The godparents are Daniel and Margaret Clinton. The residence of the Gernon family is Verdonstown.

Next Margaret “Garlans” was baptized on 8 March 1816. The address of her family is Verdonstown. In place of the first name of Margaret’s father is a ?, which is an indication the transcriber could not read the father’s name. Margaret’s mother is Catherine Clark. I found other records that may pertain to your Garland ancestors, though you may already have these records. But in case you don’t please see the following:

At the FMP website as describe in the previous communication, I uncovered the baptism records for two children of a Francis and Bridget Garland. The children are Anne and Bridget, who were baptized in the Kignscourt Catholic Parish. The town of Kingscourt is actually in County Cavan, though the Catholic Parish of Kingscourt also extends into the bordering county of Meath. Kingscourt at one time was also known as, “Dunaree.” In the Irish language the name of the town is, “Dún an Rí,” which means “Fort of the King.”

An alternate name for the Kingscourt Catholic Parish is Enniskeen. Enniskeen is also the name of the Civil Parish that Kingscourt, and several townlands located near Kingscourt, were located in. See: https://is.gd/fRPImH

The FMP baptism transcription shows that Anne Garland was baptized on 29 November 1839, and that her father was Francis Garland and her mother Bridget Garland. You can view the transcription at: https://www.findmypast.co.uk/transcript?id=IRE%2FPRS%2FBAP%2F6178841

As you can see the handwriting in the baptism register is very bad. The first name of the godfather looks like it could be Laurence, though I couldn’t tell what his last name was. The first name of the godmother looks like Anne, but I couldn’t decipher what her last name was either.

Bridget Garland was baptized in the Kingscourt Catholic Parish 10 years later on 8 December 1849. Her father’s first name is recorded as Frank. No last name is transcribed for “Brig.” See the transcription at: https://www.findmypast.co.uk/transcript?id=IRE%2FPRS%2FBAP%2F4547882

To find her baptism go down the left margin of the left page until you come to the number 8. Bridget’s godmother is Rose McMahon. The first name of her godfather is “Michl,” though I could not make out Michael’s last name.

I suspect that Francis and Bridget had other children baptized in the Kingscourt Catholic Parish between Anne and Bridget. Their baptism however may have been too difficult to understand by FMP transcribers because of the handwriting, or the mother Bridget may have had several children who did not survive long enough to be baptized. Then too, Francis and Bridget may not have had children from 1845 to 1848, as these were years of the Great Famine, with 1847 being one of the worst years.

It also may be the Garland family left Ireland in the 1850 because Francis could not find work as a stone mason.

I don’t know if the two Garland children would have been baptized in the Kingscourt Parish Church, as they may have lived in one of the surrounding townland in either County Cavan or County Meath with a church in the Kingscourt parish closer to their residence.

But in either case the children would not have been baptized in the current church structure. According to National Inventory of Architectural Heritage/Buildings of Ireland website, the Church of the Immaculate Conception was constructed between 1869 and 1872, though it was built on the site of “an earlier chapel.” See a description of the Church of the Immaculate Conception at the following Buildings of Ireland website link: https://is.gd/teD2fP

You can see the location of the former “R.C. Chapel” in Kingscourt (before the Church of the Immaculate Conception was built) on an Ordnance Survey Map from the 1837 to 1842 time period, which is the time period when Anne Garland was baptized. I next looked for but did not find the Catholic marriage record for Francis Garland and Bridget in County Cavan, or County Louth, or anywhere else in Ireland. If they married in the Kingscourt Catholic parish, the record of their marriage may not exist. According to the National Library of Ireland, Kingscourt Catholic Parish marriages begin on 15 August 1838, while baptisms commence on 16 October 1838. They may have been married before 15 August 1838, which also means they may have had other children born and baptized in the Kingscourt Parish before 16 October 1838.

Barbara, did Francis Garland and his family live in Chelsea, Mass? If so I found a document known as a Declaration of Intention, filed by Francis. The Declaration of Intention, also known as “First Papers,” was filed by a person who intended to become a U.S. Citizen prior to actually taking the citizenship oath.

The Declaration of Intention was discovered at the Ancestry.com website.

The Declaration of Intention is attached to this reply and shows that 46 year old Francis was born in County Louth on or about May 1 of 1807, and that he arrived in Boston on or about May 15, 1850. He filed the Declaration of Intention in the Circuit Court for the District of Massachusetts on 5 July 1853.

This is a very nice looking document which you can have matted and framed. If you do want to matt and frame the Declaration, I recommend that you copy it on archival paper, rather than regular copy paper, so that it will not deteriorate as quickly over time.

It was probably not a coincidence that Francis filed his Declaration of Intention the day after Independence Day on July 4. He may have felt that now, in America, he and his family were free of the terrible famine in Ireland that prevented him from supporting his family.

Based on the information in his Declaration of Intention, I found what I believe is the ship that Francis “Garlan” sailed to America on. The ship was the 499 ton Esther May, commanded by Herman Foster, which arrived in Boston, from Liverpool, England, on 15 May 1850, which is the date that Francis had recorded on his Declaration of Intention. The manifest for the Esther May is attached. No family members are recorded with him on board the Esther May. Francis is shown to be age 34 at the time he arrived in Boston in 1850, placing his year of birth circa 1816.

After finding Francis “Garlan” in the ship’s list for the Esther May arriving in Boston, I looked for the ship’s passenger lists at Ancestry.com for his wife Bridget arriving in Boston in the 1850s but did not find her.

I next located Francis Garland in the 1850 U.S. Census at Ancestry.com, living in the household of 31 year old Patrick Denning and Patrick’s family in Chelsea, Massachusetts. Patrick’s occupation is Mason. No other Garland family members are in the Denning household with Francis, which is an indication that he left Ireland without his wife and children so that he could begin work to support his family when they arrived. The 1850 census was enumerated at the Denning household on 8 August by the Assistant Marshal, Darius A. Martin. The census is attached to this reply. The Denning household begins on Line 23 of the census.

The census shows that Patrick Denning was from Ireland. He must have been in the U.S. for at least 6 years before Francis arrived, as Patrick and his wife Mary had a 6 year old son named Philip who was born in Massachusetts. Patrick Denning and Francis Garland may have known each other in Ireland as they both had the same occupation, “Mason.” They may have known each other in Kingscourt, County Cavan.

Some states took their own population census enumerations back in the 19th century. Massachusetts was one of them. Ancestry.com has Massachusetts State Census enumerations for the years 1855 and 1865. With this in mind I looked for Francis Garland in the 1855 Massachusetts State Census and found him. The census shows that 45 year old “Frank” Garland, his 42 year old wife Bridget, and 7 of their children were living in Chelsea, Mass.

The 1855 census shows that Frank Garland was a Stone Mason born in Ireland. His wife Bridget was also born in Ireland as were 6 of their 7 children. The children born in Ireland were: 18 year old Catherine; 16 year old Mary; 15 year old Walter, employed as a Stone Mason; 13 year old Ann, 11 year old Michael and 5 year old Bridget. The youngest child, 2 year old Frank, was born in Massachusetts.

The family enumerated before the Garlands is the family of 40 year old William Dinning, his 31 year old wife Rose, and their sons, 7 year old James, born in Ireland, and 2 year old William H. Dinning, born in Massachusetts. William Sr. and Rose were born in Ireland. This William Dinning was likely related to the Patrick Denning in the 1850 census.

The 1855 Massachusetts State Census is attached to this reply. The Garland family is on the left-hand census page beginning on Line 10. The Dinning household begins on Line 6.

In the 1850 federal census, Francis Garland was living in the household of Patrick “Denning.” I suspect that Patrick Denning, who was working as a mason, and William Dinning in the 1855 census, were related and that Patrick Garland was their friend.

At this point in the research I concentrated on going back to the FMP website to see if I could find the marriage transcription for a William Dinning who married a lady named Rose. I found what I believe to be the marriage record showing that a “Willy Dennis” and Rose McMahon were married in the Kingscourt Catholic Parish on 17 May 1845. The last name of the groom in the marriage record looks like “Dening,” rather than Denis. Rose’s maiden name does look like, “McMahon.” One of the witnesses to the marriage was John Dening. The other witness was Richard Reilly.

The second baptism is for James Dinning, who was baptized in the Kingscourt Catholic Parish in October 1848. The FMP transcription does not give the day in October when James was baptized. See: https://registers.nli.ie//registers/vtls000635174#page/102/mode/1up

A copy of the original baptism record for James Dinning is on the right-hand page but it is difficult to describe where on the page it is. Count down 23 lines from under the Baptism heading at the top of the page and you’ll come to the baptism, which shows that James’s godparents were Hugh Mathews and Bridget Dinning.

This James Dinning would be the child enumerated in the 1855 Massachusetts States Census in Chelsea Massachusetts, in the household with his parents William and Rose, and younger brother William. I don’t know what happened to William and Rose’s son Patrick. He may have died in Ireland, or on the voyage to the U.S., or in Massachusetts after he and his family arrived. I did not find a Kingscourt burial record for Patrick or a death record for him in Chelsa.

As the above records show, the Dinning family worshipped in the Kingscourt Catholic Parish, County Cavan, where the Garland family also worshipped.

Barbara, in any of your research have you come across the Dinning/Denning, or McMahon surnames?

It was very common for people living in the same town and parish in Ireland, to emigrate to the same area in their adopted country, as would have been the case for the Garland and Dinning families.

The 1860 census shows that 52 year old Francis Garland, his 47 year old wife Bridget, and their four children are living in Chelsea, Massachusetts, where Francis was employed as a “Stonemason.” The census further shows that the value of Francis’s personal estate was $1,300. He and his wife Bridget were born in Ireland, as was their 20 year old daughter Ann, employed as a “Laundress,” with her own personal estate worth $50. Ann, as well as her 17 year old brother Michael and 9 year old sister Bridget were born in Ireland. Ann and Bridget would have been the two children who were baptized in the Kingscourt Catholic Parish in 1839 and 1849 respectively. The census also shows that 9 year old Bridget was attending school, as was her 7 year old brother Francis, who was born in Massachusetts. The 1860 census is attached to this reply

The Garland household was visited on the 25th day of July 1860 by the census taker, Darius A. Martin, who was also the Assistant Marshal, the same Assistant Marshal found in the 1850 census.

The household of Francis and Bridget Garland begins on Line 6 of the 1860 census. The street address is not recorded, but a year later the 1861 Chelsea Directory shows that Francis Garland, a “stone layer,” was living at 33 Cedar Street. The directory, located at Ancestry.com, is attached to this reply.

I could not find the location of Cedar Street in Chelsea on a Google Map of the city.

I next located the household of 60 year old Francis Garland in the 1865 census living in Chelsea. The census shows he was born in Ireland, but the information following his birthplace is not legible because it is shaded into black. His wife Bridget is not in the household with him. The children in the household with Francis are 24 year old Annie; 21 year old Michael; 14 year old Bridget; and 12 year old Frank. Annie, Michael, and Bridget were born in Ireland while Frank was born in Mass. Also in the Garland household is 28 year old Mary Carlan, born in Ireland, and her 4 year old daughter Mary Carlan, born in Massachusetts. The 1865 Massachusetts census is attached to this reply. The Graland family is on the right-hand census page toward the bottom of the page, beginning on Line 34

My questions now were, “What happened to Francis’s wife Bridget, and who was Mary Carlan and were she and her daughter Mary related to Francis and Bridget Garland? Perhaps their daughter and granddaughter?

I suspected that Francis’s wife Bridget had died between the enumeration of the 1860 Federal Census and the enumeration of the 1865 Massachusetts State Census.

I located the death index for Bridget Garland at the FamilySearch website, which shows she died in Chelsea, Massachusetts on 12 January 1862 at the age 49 years. Her “Estimated” birth year is 1813. Her husband is Francis Garland. The index is below:

Attached to the FamilySearch index is a copy of the original City of Chelsea death register for the year 1862. The register is also attached to this reply. Mary’s death is recorded on Line 12. Unfortunately the names of her parents are not recorded.

The second question was answered when I found the marriage record for Mary Garland, who married Thomas Carolan in Lynn, Massachusetts on 20 September 1859, according to the index at Ancestry.com:

A copy of the original marriage register entry for Thomas Carolan and Mary Garland accompanies the index from Ancestry.com. I accessed the marriage register which gives the further information that Thomas’s occupation was, “Currier,” and also shows this was the first marriage for him and Bridget. The name of the Catholic priest who married the couple was “Patrick Strain of Chelsea.”

The marriage register is attached to this reply. The marriage for Thomas and Mary is on Line 92 of the register.

At age 22 in the year 1859 when she married, Mary would have been born circa 1837. The 1865 census shows she is 28, which also places her year of birth circa 1837. She, like her brother Michael, may have been born in or near Kingscourt, County Cavan.

In the 1865 Massachusetts State Census, Mary’s husband Thomas is not in the Garland household with his wife and daughter. This could mean he was in another household when the census took place, or he died between the time he and Mary had married in 1859 and the time the 1865 census was enumerated on 1 May of that year.

Back at the FamilySearch website I found the death index for Thomas Carolan, showing he died in Chelsea on 12 August 1860. His death took place less than a year after he and Mary Garland were married. At the time of death he was 24 years, 11 months, and 13 days old, with an “Estimated” birth year of 1837. He was born in Ireland. The index also shows he was married and that his occupation was “Currier.” His parents are shown to be Robert and Margaret.

Linked to the index at FamilySearch is a copy of the Chelsea Death Register, which I’ve attached to this reply. The death register gives the further information that Thomas died of “Typhoid Fever.” His death is located on Line 31 of the death register.

The 1865 Massachusetts State Census does not give the name of the street where Francis Garland and his family were living. But, the 1866 Chelsea Directory shows that Francis was a “stone layer” whose house was located at 12 Cottage Street. The directory also shows that living on Matthews Street in Chelsea is a Walter Garland, whose occupation was “mason.” Walter was probably Francis’s son. The directory is attached.

I next looked for but did not find the birth index or birth record for Thomas and Mary Carolan’s daughter Mary, who is shown to be 4 years old in the 1865 Massachusetts State Census.

The 1870 census shows that 65 year old Francis Garland is still living in Chelsea. His occupation was Journeyman Stone Cutter. The value of his real estate was $2,000, while the value if his personal estate was $600. The $2,000 real state value is an indication that Francis owned his own business. The census also shows he was from Ireland and that he is a male citizen over the age of 21.

In the household with him is his 26 year old son Michael, also a Journeyman Stone Mason born in Ireland, as well as a male citizen over the age of 21. The household also includes Francis’s 17 year old daughter Bridget, a laborer born in Massachusetts, and 16 year old Francis Jr., also a laborer born in Massachusetts. Francis’s daughter, 30 year old Mary Carolan and her daughter 9 year old Mary A. Carolan are also in the household. The occupation of 30 year old Mary is Housekeeper. The 1870 census, which is attached to this reply, was taken on 21 July of that year by the enumerator and Assistant Marshal, Darius A. Martin.

The 1870 census does not give the name of the street where the Francis Garland household lived, but the 1870 Chelsea Directory, found at Ancestry.com, does. The directory shows that Francis and his son Michael, each employed as a “stonemason,” were living at 177 Cottage Street. The 1866 Chelsea Directory showed the Garlands living at 12 Cottage Street.

The 1870 Chelsea Directory also shows that stonemason, Walter Garland, was living at 2nd Street, near Spruce Street. The directory is attached to this reply.

I looked several time for Francis Garland in the 1880 U.S. Census, but did not originally locate him. This search took place at Ancestry.com. But, when I looked for Walter Garland in the 1880 census, I not only found him, but I also found that Francis and he were the only two in the household located at 13 Cottage Street in Chelsea.

Francis’s age in the 1880 census looks like 50, but I believe that is incorrect as he was 65 years old in the 1870 census, 60 years old in the 1865 Massachusetts census, 52 years old in the 1860 census, and 41 years old in the 1850 census.

The 1880 census is faded in several places and it is a challenge to determine Walter’s age, but it looks like 36, placing his year of birth circa 1844, which would make him Francis’s son. He was probably born in County Cavan. The 1880 census also shows that Francis is a widower and Walter single and also both were stone masons. The census is incorrect when it has the place of birth for Francis and Walter as Massachusetts, rather than Ireland. The 1880 census is attached.

We know from the 1855 Massachusetts State Census that Francis and Bridget Garland had a son named Walter, and that’s why I believe the Walter Garland in the 1880 census is the son of Francis.

The 1880 Chelsea Directory confirms that Francis was living at 13 Cottage Street and that he was a “stone layer.” The directory listing also shows that living at 13 Cottage Street is Frank J., whose occupation is weaver. Walter Graland, a stone mason is also shown to be boarding at 13 Cottage Street in the directory, which is attached to this reply.

The 1880 directory also shows that Michael garland, a stone mason was living at 86 Cherry Street, and that a Miss Mary Garland was living at 45 Cherry Street. I suspect that Michael and Mary were also the children of Francis Garland, as Francis and his wife Bridget had children named Michael and Mary.

According to the Lynn, Massachusetts Death Register, found at FamilySearch, 83 year old Francis Garland died in Lynn, Massachusetts on 22 October 1887 at the age of 83 years 5 months and 22 days. His estimated year of birth is 1804. His birth place was Ireland. At the time of death he was a widower. His parents were Walter and Catherine Garland. Francis was also buried in Lynn, Massachusetts. A copy of the original Lynn, Massachusetts Death Register is attached to this reply, and further shows that Francis died of “Cancer of Liver.”

I am not sure why Francis died in Lynn, which is almost 9 miles north of Chelsea. Even so, the Chelsea Directory for 1888 shows that Francis Garland “died October 23 1887.” The directory listing is attached.

Next I found information that I had been looking for since uncovering the Kingscourt County Cavan Parish baptisms for Ann and Bridget Garland. What I didn’t know up until this point in the research was Bridget Garland’s maiden name.

Her maiden name is recorded in the death record for Mary “Carlan/Garland,” who died in Boston on 8 September 1910 at age 69. According to her death record, Mary’s parents were Francis Garland and Bridget Segrave. See the death index for Mary below, which comes from Ancestry.com:

A copy of Mary’s Boston death certificate is attached, and further shows that her death took place at 15 Warren Place, Boston, and that her husband had been Thomas Carlan. Her occupation is listed as, “at home.” The death record also shows she died of Chronic Valve Heart Disease, which she had for a duration of 2 years. The contributing cause of death was Broncho-Pneumonia, which she had for the duration of 1 year. Her physician was Chas B. Sullivan, who signed the death certificate on September 9, 1910. Mary is buried in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Lynn, Massachusetts. The undertaker was P.J. Crosby.

Mary’s father Francis Garland died in Lynn, but I did not find a Find A Grave entry for him in St. Mary’s Cemetery, though he may be buried there.

If Bridget Segrave was born in the Enniskeen Civil Parish, County Cavan, which is the parish that the Kingscourt Catholic Parish was located in, there will not be a baptism record for her, as baptisms are only available for Kingcourt at the National Library of Ireland from the year 1838.

If you go back to a copy of the original 1839 Kingscourt baptism record for Anne, and take another look at the godparents, you can now see that it appears the last name of her godparents, Laurence and Anne, does appear like it could be Segrave, though unless you knew that beforehand, you wouldn’t really be able to tell.

The same with the1849 Kingscourt baptism for Anne. Her godmother is Rose McMahon and it looks like her godfather is Michael Segrave, though a portion Michael’s last name extends into the fold at the spine of the register.
